Normally, a minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor's degree in life or social sciences, environmental sciences, geography, or related subject area, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Applicants with an appropriate professional qualification and relevant work experience may also apply. For practitioners without a qualification but who have 10 or more years relevant experience, a portfolio of activities and an essay of 3000 words will be evaluated by the programme team. The field of citizen science includes, by its very nature, persons without formal education who become interested in a topic and subsequently develop a rich and detailed subject knowledge. However, such persons may not have an undergraduate degree or other qualification. On this basis, we will provide a route to qualification for persons with extensive field experience (minimum 10 years), that will display expertise and strong commitment to study. The request for a 3000 word entry essay will test an applicant’s academic skills, and is a significant entry assessment that may develop into, or form the basis for a research project. The MSc in Citizen Science will enable a new generation of socially engaged scholars and practitioners to meet the needs of industry, government and public sectors which are seeing a rapid growth of the interest and participation of the general public in collecting and processing data to answer critical environmental questions.
 

Upon completion of the programme you will possess the theoretical and practical skills to successfully plan, deliver, evaluate, and manage citizen science projects, and apply contextually appropriate data management practices to support open and accessible science. You will also leave with the necessary insight to plan and undertake independent research, and the ability to report its findings to a variety of audiences.
