About
The University of Bristol is a red-brick research university located in Bristol, England. Although it can be traced back to a Merchant Venturers' school founded in 1595 and University College, Bristol, which had been around since 1876, it obtained its royal charter in 1909. Over 600+ undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered by Bristol's six academic faculties, most of which are located in the Tyndalls Park neighbourhood. Each faculty is made up of numerous schools and departments.
In 2020-2021, the university earned a total of £752.0 million, of which £169.8 million came from grants and contracts for research and the university is Bristol's largest independent employer. Over 208 buildings are used for academic, sporting, and administrative functions at the university. The Faculty of Arts and the biological sciences building are located on Clifton Campus. The largest academic collection in the southwest of England is housed in the more than 1.4 million printed books and journals that are available in Bristol University’s nine libraries.
