Overview

About

The University of Bedfordshire (UOB) is a public research university with campuses in Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. In the initial stages, two schools were the forerunners of the University of Luton which later merged with De Montfort University to form UOB. The university was renamed in 2006 by the Privy Council and given its university status. The university currently has five campuses in London and Birmingham, divided into the Luton Campus (The Main Campus), Bedford Campus, Putteridge Bury Campus, Aylesbury Campus and Milton Keynes Campus. UOB has a growing portfolio of international partnerships in Egypt, Vietnam, Oman, and Mauritius, among others.

Due to its popularity in the higher education sector, UOB has students from all over the world with a diverse student population. More than 40% of its student body comes from families with no history of higher education participation. Around 70% are mature returners to education, with more than half coming from black or ethnic minority backgrounds. It collaborates with about 40 academic partners, both in the UK and abroad, to deliver a wide range of courses ranging from foundation degrees to doctorates. There are four faculties -

  1. Faculty of Health and Social Sciences
  2. Faculty of Creative Arts
  3. Faculty of Education and Sports
  4. Faculty of Science and Technologies

The main campus of UOB features a purpose-built STEM building, a seven-story library, a Postgraduate & CPD Centre and a variety of modern facilities to support each of the courses offered to students. A media arts centre, a moot court, business pods, healthcare simulation suites, a campus gym and a three-story art studio with designated fashion and photography studios are among the facilities, curated specifically for students.

Cultural and Media Studies, Communication, Social Work, Social Policy and Administration, and English Language and Literature are some of the top assessment units. The university was granted FairTrade status in 2012. The university participated in the Research Assessment Exercise in 2014 and rose by 22 places in the REF Power Ranking to the 4th position with nearly half of its research rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. Professor Rebecca Bunting was appointed Vice-Chancellor in 2020. John Bercow, the former Speaker of the House of Commons, was the most recent Chancellor of the UOB.
