Teaching is informed and underpinned by current research, which can be categorised broadly into five groups: exercise physiology, biomechanics, psychology, strength and conditioning, and sociology of sport.
Course structure
Core modules
Applied Laboratory and Field Skills
This module will develop your understanding and skills in sport and exercise laboratory and field techniques, data collection/processing, and analysis. You will gain hands on experience of using a wide range of equipment that is used to assess different aspects of sport and exercise performance. You will also develop an evidence-based reflective learning approach in the assessment of a range of clients.
Development of the Sport and Exercise Specialist
This module aims to provide you with a critical understanding of some of the key competencies and knowledge which are relevant to professional sport and exercise practitioners, such as the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, and the British Sociological Association. You will be encouraged to demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical basis of, and variety of approaches to, assessment and intervention in a variety of sport and exercise related issues. You will also develop self-awareness and self-reflection in relation to your personal development.
Sport and Exercise Research Project
This module is designed to enable you to apply your learning from previous modules to conduct a substantial self-initiated research project. The project will be conducted under the supervision of your academic supervisor.
Student Independent Learning
This module provides you with a further opportunity to design a unit of advanced learning in a specific area that is relevant to your area of interest.
This is achieved by allowing you to negotiate, manage and present personal learning outcomes. Please note that this module is not necessarily constrained by term dates. A learning contract must be completed by liaising with the relevant member of staff associated with the topic you choose to study.
Understanding Research in Sport and Exercise Science
The module is designed to develop knowledge and skills in research methodology. It culminates in the presentation of a sport and exercise research proposal.
The module initially focuses on the methods of knowledge acquisition and the theory and practice of different research paradigms commonly used in the study of sport. Following this, learning is directed toward developing your ability to effectively utilise traditional and more contemporary approaches to statistical analysis and report the findings in a manner commensurate with peer-reviewed publications.
Finally, the module focuses on the skills required to develop, justify and construct a realistic research proposal that is appropriate to your own research or practice.
