Module content develops your understanding of the principles underpinning clinical practice in trauma and orthopaedics and your skills in evidence-based practice, research methods and statistics.

Course structure
Year 1 core modules
Developing Research Projects

You gain the knowledge and skills you need to design and manage a primary or secondary research audit or evaluation project that’s relevant to your practice. You also cover research governance and ethics, and prepare for applying for ethical approval or release. And we prepare you for your dissertation if you choose to progress to the master’s course.

Implementing Evidence Based Practice

You gain the knowledge and skills to use research evidence to inform your clinical practice. You develop focused questions, undertake a structured search, critically evaluate research evidence, apply evidence to practice and evaluate the application to practice. The module also supports you in making the transition to studying at master’s level.

Practical Statistics

You gain a solid grounding in the statistical concepts needed in analysing basic health and medical data. The indicative content provides an overview of the basic concepts in statistics. It leads you from understanding basic fundamentals up to multivariate analysis.

Trauma and Orthopaedics

You will further develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of relevant applied orthopaedic science topics such as anatomy and physiology, surgical anatomy, orthopaedic pathology, biomechanics, clinical assessment and investigation, evidence-based orthopaedic disease management and clinical decision making, and trauma management.

 
Year 2 core modules
Dissertation and Research Article

You plan, undertake and write up a research project relevant to your subject. A range of research methodologies can be utilised such as quantitative, qualitative, systematic review, evaluation and audit methods. You will also gain experience in writing a research article for publication.

Admission criteria: part-time route
• medical degree (MBBS and MRCS or equivalent postgraduate degree such as MS or DNB)
• working within orthopaedics speciality at or above F2/SHO/ST3 or equivalent
• GMC registration
• international/overseas applicants must have been offered employment in the UK through the Medical Training Initiative and have IELTS 7 or above before applying
• admission will be dependent on successful interview.
Under recognition of prior learning (RPL) you may be awarded credits for previous study or related work experience which can be credited towards the course you want to study.

Career opportunities

Full time students have the opportunity to undertake an optional observational experience within a clinical setting. A clinical advisor devises an individualised plan for each student, which is detailed in a learning contract. Observational opportunities are spread across the course and include a range of relevant activities. They may take place at any of the local NHS trust sites and you are expected to cover any associated costs yourself.

The course supports your career development by enhancing the research, evidence-based practice skills and principles underpinning specialist clinical practice that are required within the specialist field of trauma and orthopaedics. It provides an additional masters level qualification that may be used to support career progression. Engaging in research and a record of publication are important aspects in career progression if you are aiming to achieve a consultant position. Providing an opportunity to develop your research skills and to support you in preparing your work for publication is an important element of the course.
