St Mary's University (SMU), Twickenham is a public university devoted to the Catholic Church's higher education mission located in Strawberry Hill, Twickenham, in South West London. It was first established in 1850 as a Catholic school teacher training institution, and in 1949 it was made a constituent college of the University of London Institute of Education. It was formerly known as St. Mary's University College, but on January 23, 2014, the Privy Council gave it full university status. The institution has been home to the Mater Ecclesiae College since July 2019. Heythrop College, University of London, which had its ecclesiastical faculties ensconced since 2013 in the "Bellarmine Institute," had earlier in the year closed.
