Overview

About

Sotheby's Institute of Art is a graduate school established in 1969. It is a for-profit, private school of higher learning devoted to the study of art and its markets. The institution provides a variety of postgraduate certifications, summer, semester, and online courses, public programmes, and executive education in addition to full-time approved master's degrees. It is a division of the fine art dealer Sotheby's. Sotheby’s was originally founded as a connoisseurship training programme by Sotheby's auction firm and aims to educate students on the business of art while examining both the theoretical and practical facets of the art industry.

In 1995, the Department of Art History and Archaeology at the University of Manchester conferred Sotheby's the designation of Affiliated Institution. The institute offers full-time master's degree programmes in East Asian Art, Fine and Decorative Art, Contemporary Design, and Art Business. The institute provides two-week and month-long certificate programmes throughout the summer on a variety of subjects, including provenance research, art appraisal, and curation. Master’s degrees at the London campus are offered through the University of Manchester.

Sotheby’s Institute of Art’s acceptance rate is around 75 - 80% and more than 2,500 students study at the Sotheby's Institute each year. Many of them go on to work in the art industry and network. The largest and most influential alumni network of its sort belongs to the Master's degree, which alone has over 8,000 alumni. The curriculum combines academic rigour with practical, real-world experience and emphasizes the critical understanding of art and its markets. The institute is affiliated with Sotheby's auction house and provides students with access to its expertise, resources, and global network of contacts in the art world.
