Overview

About

Richmond, the American University in London is an American International University based in West London that was founded in 1972 and has two campuses in Richmond Hill and close to Kensington High Street. It was founded by the social entrepreneur & British educator Cyril Taylor (chairman of the American Institute for Foreign Study). The university has been awarding US degrees since 1981 and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The university is pleased to announce that it has been granted the authority to award students with its own UK degrees beginning in August 2018, as a result of the Privy Council's recent grant of Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP). This in turn means that the students studying at the university can gain degrees from both the UK and US by studying one programme.

The university began teaching on the campus of the former Richmond Theological College, as a Methodist theological college and is now part of the University of London. The American Institute For Foreign Study used the college campus for several years for their study abroad programmes in London. AIFS paid £300,000 (equivalent to £3.82 million in 2015) for half of the college's 10-acre site, including the majority of its buildings and front lawns, in order to establish a new American liberal arts college. In 1978, a second campus for third and fourth-year students, as well as the college's US Study Abroad Programme, opened on St Albans Grove and Ansdell Street in Kensington.

Richmond, The American International University in London is made up of three schools: Richmond Business School, Richmond School of Communications, Arts & Social Sciences (CASS) and the Richmond School of Liberal Arts. Standard degrees are four years long, but they can be completed sooner with transfer credits from US Advanced Placement classes, UK A and AS Levels, the International Baccalaureate, and other comparable qualifications.  Richmond's undergraduate programmes follow a broad, liberal arts approach to education that is combined with the British system of specialization. Besides, it provides a variety of postgraduate degrees such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Luxury Brand Management, International Relations, Art History & Visual Culture, and Advertising & Public Relations.
