Program Overview

Biomedical engineering brings technological innovation to medicine and healthcare, integrating engineering with the human body.

From improving understanding of how our bodies function and the biomaterials from which we are made, to the design and development of artificial medical implants – hip joints, heart valves and prosthetic limbs - biomedical engineers find creative ways to save and improve the quality of people’s lives.

In Year 1, you’ll build a strong foundation in fundamental engineering concepts such as fluid mechanics, design, materials and mathematical modelling, whilst being introduced to Biomedical engineering through our ‘Explore Biomedical Engineering’ module. Modules in design and experimental practice, will help you to develop the practical workshop and laboratory-based skills necessary for all engineers, and put core programme material into perspective and to practical use.

In Year 2, a combination of specialist biomedical engineering modules and broader engineering topics will develop your knowledge of relevant biomedical engineering applications linked to some of our own ground-breaking research.

You’ll have the option to advance your understanding during Year 3 with modules covering topics such as tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, medical device design, and medical imaging analysis and robotics. The third-year design project will provide an opportunity for you to concentrate on your specific interests, whilst working on an industry-focused area in collaboration with the School’s world-leading researchers.

Students who choose to take the MEng degree will work with research and industry-led teams, and in partnership with clinicians, to solve real-world biomedical engineering research and design problems.

We’ve recently undertaken a review of our programmes to ensure that they will prepare you for life beyond 2030 and ensure they reflect the global challenges facing both our society and your future as engineers. We have developed the modules we offer in consultation with our students, staff and industry to enhance your student experience and graduate employability.

Our graduate attributes matrix supports students to develop the knowledge and skills they need to succeed both personally and professionally. Using this matrix you will recognise and record the wide-ranging skills you develop over the duration of your programme, reflect on what you want to do in the future and gain the tools you need to effectively market yourself to future employers.
