Courses are divided into modules. You will normally take modules totaling 360 credits.
On the three-year BSc programme, you can also choose to study a semester abroad during Year 2 or study a full year abroad or take an extra-mural year between Years 2 and 3. If you choose to study a year abroad or to take a extra-mural year this will change your three year programme to a four year programme.
Year 1
Required modules
During your first year, you have the option to apply to study for a semester or year abroad. If you choose a semester abroad, this will take place in your second year. If you choose a year abroad, you may transfer to the four year programme and spend your third year studying abroad, before returning to complete a final year with us.
You are required to take:
- Biochemistry (15 credits)
- Chemistry for the Biosciences (15 credits)
- Genetics & Molecular Biology (15 credits)
- Cell Biology & Neuroscience (15 credits)
- Fundamentals of Physiology & Anatomy (30 credits)
- Fundamentals of Pharmacology (15 credits)
- Skills for the Biosciences (15 credits)
Year 2
Required modules
You will have the opportunity to study abroad for either a semester in your second year, or for a full year between years 2 and 3 at one of our partner universities.
You are required to take:
- Molecular Basis of Gene Expression (15 credits)
- Molecular Biology Research Skills (15 credits)
- Human & Molecular Genetics A (15 credits)
- Human & Molecular Genetics B (15 credits)
Year 3
Required modules
If you wish to take a full year abroad, you may transfer to the four year programme and spend your third year studying abroad, before returning to complete the required & optional modules from Year 3 in your final year.
You are required to take:
- Molecular Genetics of Model Organisms (15 credits)
- Advanced Molecular Genetics (15 credits)
You are also required to take:
- Molecular Biology Practical Project (30 credits) and a Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Library Project (15 credits)
OR
- Extended Research Project in Genetics (45 credits)
Year 4
Required modules
If you have transferred to the Year Abroad programme, you will study abroad at a partner institution in your third year. You will then return to King’s and complete the required & optional modules from Year 3 in your final year.
If you have transferred to the Molecular Genetics MSci, you are required to study the below modules during Year 4.

- Project Design in Molecular Science (15 credits)
- Molecular Genetics Research Dissertation (60 credits)
- Molecular Science Research Skills (30 credits)
