Infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases and cancer represent a significant burden to global health. These diseases kill millions of people every year and, as demonstrated by the COVID-19 pandemic, have the potential to severely impact society and devastate economies.

Our intercalated Infectious Disease, Autoimmunity & Immunotherapies BSc explores how viruses and other pathogens cause disease. You will learn how an effective immune response protects us from infectious diseases and cancer, and what happens when the immune system goes wrong.

Course Content
Structure

Courses are divided into modules. This is a one-year course. You will take modules totaling 120 credits.

In Semester 1, all students will choose taught modules totalling 60 credits. In Semester 2, students will choose either a 45-credit laboratory project module (‘Bench’ Stream) or a 15-credit library project module (‘Bedside’ Stream).

- Analysis of scientific papers in infectious diseases and immunobiology (Bench Stream) (15 credits)

- Viruses and Diseases (Bedside Stream) (15 credits)
- Analysis of scientific papers in infectious diseases and immunobiology (Bedside Stream) (15 credits)
- Library Project (Bedside Stream) (15 credits)
Entry Requirement
Must be registered on as a student at your home university for the duration of your time at King's (i.e you cannot be on a leave of absence from your degree) and your university is transferring at least some of the credits earned at King's towards your degree.
Undergraduate students must be registered on a BA/BSc/LLB or equivalent undergraduate degree.
Undertaken a minimum of 1 year of university level study.

This intercalated BSc programme will prepare medical students to understand how a variety of infectious and autoimmune diseases as well as cancer can be treated or prevented using antimicrobial drugs, vaccines and immunotherapies. Knowledge of infection and the immune response to it is required for many medical specialties and this programme will prepare students for career paths specialising in infection (infectious diseases, medical microbiology, medical virology, tropical medicine), allergy, immunology, sexual health and general practice.
