Program Overview

Our Global Health & Social Medicine BA offers a unique and exciting course with the opportunity to study abroad for a year and aims to train a new generation of leaders who want to make a difference in the world.

The course is designed for those who wish to understand the social determinants of health and illness in a global context, and to recognise and evaluate the range of medical and healthcare approaches.

Whether you want to promote responsible biomedical research, address global health inequities or ensure fairness across generations, you are required to consider numerous perspectives in order to succeed, fostering thinking across disciplines and national boundaries.

Course Content
Structure
This is a three-year degree course in which you will take a combination of required and optional modules to total 360 credits. Students will have the option to apply to study abroad for a year, which would extend the programme to a four-year degree course if they are successful

Year 1

Required modules

The course consists of a mixture of required and optional modules, and a research-based dissertation in the final year. Required modules are all taught from within the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine, which also offers optional modules in Years Two and Three. Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totaling 120 credits.

You are required to take the following modules:

• Introduction to Global Health 1 (15 credits)
• Introduction to Global Health 2 (15 credits)
• Introduction to Social Medicine 1 (15 credits)
• Introduction to Social Medicine 2 (15 credits)
• Research Practice & Design Studio (30 credits)
• Foundations in Social Science and Social Theory (30 credits)

Year 2

Required modules

You are required to take the following modules:

• Key Concepts in Global Health (30 credits)
• Key Concepts in Social Medicine (30 credits)
• The Dissertation Laboratory (15 credits)

Year 3

Required modules

You are required to take the following modules:

• Contemporary Crises in Global Health & Social Medicine (15 credits)
• Dissertation in Global Health & Social Medicine (30 credits)
Entry Requirement
Must be registered on as a student at your home university for the duration of your time at King's (i.e you cannot be on a leave of absence from your degree) and your university is transferring at least some of the credits earned at King's towards your degree.
Undergraduate students must be registered on a BA/BSc/LLB or equivalent undergraduate degree.
Undertaken a minimum of 1 year of university level study.
