Program Overview

Studying geography at King's enables you to examine some of the key issues facing the world today, including sustainability, global inequality, urban regeneration and gentrification, as well as the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation on society.

Our Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Geography course offers an exciting course of study covering Development, the Environment, Urban and Cultural Geography, Spatial Data Science as well as interactions with Physical Geography & Environmental Science.

You will learn advanced analytical and technical skills that can be applied to understanding a range of real-world issues and graduate with a career-relevant set of skills, determined by your study pathway.

Course Content
Structure
Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.

This is a three-year degree course in which you will take a combination of required and optional modules to total 360 credits.

Year 1

Required modules

In the first year you will have an average of 28.5 hours in scheduled learning and teaching activities per 15 credit module. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

You are required to take the following modules:

• The Changing Natural Environment I (15 credits)
• Geographical Foundations I: the making of the modern world I (15 credits)
• Geographical Foundations II: challenges of the modern world (15 credits)
• Principles of Geographical Inquiry (30 credits)
• Geography in Action (15 credits)
• Geography Tutorials: Critical Thinking & Techniques (30 credits)

Year 2

Required modules

You are required to take the following modules:

• Field Research in Human & Development Geography (30 credits)
• BA Geography Research Tutorials (15 credits)
• Geographical Research Skills (15 credits)

Please note that second year field research modules will typically have a week of intensive teaching on a residential field trip, as well as preparatory/follow-up sessions.

Year 3

Required modules

You are required to take the following modules:

• Pathways to Impact: Geographical Research & Public Policy (15 credits)
• Independent Geographical Study, IGS (30 credits)

The IGS module is a piece of individual research, which is supported on a one-to-one basis by a supervisor from within the Geography department.
Entry Requirement
Must be registered on as a student at your home university for the duration of your time at King's (i.e you cannot be on a leave of absence from your degree) and your university is transferring at least some of the credits earned at King's towards your degree.
Undergraduate students must be registered on a BA/BSc/LLB or equivalent undergraduate degree.
Undertaken a minimum of 1 year of university level study.
