Program Overview
On the Film Studies BA, you'll cover a range of global cinema and media, both contemporary and historical, and enjoy our particular strengths in the cinema and media of Europe, East Asia, and North America. You’ll explore mainstream, popular cinemas, experimental or avant-garde traditions and practices, as well as documentary, television, video and digital video – including streaming services such as Netflix - all taught by leaders in the field and internationally renowned specialists.
You’ll have the opportunity to explore creative practice in digital video and sound, including the use of professional 4K DV cameras, audio equipment, and editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Avid Pro Tools. We also run a BA Internship module which facilitates employment in London-based film and media companies.
You’ll develop a broad knowledge and deep understanding of cinema and other moving images, the societies and people that create them, the technologies they use, and the critical tools that reveal their meaning. Throughout the Film Studies BA, you'll be provided with training and skills development in visual and textual analysis, argumentation, verbal and audio-visual presentation, research and writing. Our teaching encompasses lectures, film screenings, seminar-based discussion and debate, and practical workshops.
The Department of Film Studies is based in the heart of London, within easy reach of the BFI Southbank, the BFI Library, the IMAX, the Barbican Centre, Tate Modern, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, not to mention a large concentration of cinemas.
