Program Overview

The European Studies (Spanish pathway) BA is an interdepartmental study course that allows you to study Modern Europe from a Spanish perspective. You will study the politics, history, language and contemporary culture of Spain in-depth, preparing you for the third year where you will be taught and examined at a Spanish higher education institution.

Course Content
Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will take modules totalling 120 credits.

Year 1

Required modules

You are required to take the following modules:

• The Making of Modern Europe (30 credits) [Department of European & International Studies]
• Global Iberias Perspectives: An Introduction to the Spanish and Portuguese Speaking Worlds (15 credits) [Department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies]

You are also required to take one of the following language modules based on your language ability:

• Spanish Language I (30 credits) [Department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies]
• Introductory Spanish (30 credits) [Department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies]
• Intermediate Spanish (30 credits) [Department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies]

Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will take modules totalling 120 credits.

Year 2

Required modules

You are required to take the following modules:

• The Integration of the European Union (30 credits)
• State and Nation in Spain (15 credits)

You are required to take 15-30 credits of language modules, based on your language ability:

• Spanish Language 2 (15 or 30 credits) or
• Intermediate Spanish (30 credits) (for abd initio introductory level from Year 1) or
• Spanish stage 5 [Modern Language Centre] (15 credits) +
• Language, Culture & Society (15 credits) [Modern Language Centre] (for ab initio intermediate level from Year 1)

Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will take modules totalling 120 credits.

Year 3

Required modules

You will spend your third year of study in Spain at a Spanish higher education institution, where you are required to take 60 credits of optional modules from the International Programme:

• Exchange Placement Abroad module (60 credits).

Once you have returned to King’s College London following your study abroad year, you will be required to take 30 credits of Oral Exams.

• Year Abroad Practical Language module (30 credits).

Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will take modules totalling 120 credits.

Year 4

Required modules

You are required to take the following module:

• Spanish Language 4 (15 or 30 credits)
Entry Requirement
Must be registered on as a student at your home university for the duration of your time at King's (i.e you cannot be on a leave of absence from your degree) and your university is transferring at least some of the credits earned at King's towards your degree.
Undergraduate students must be registered on a BA/BSc/LLB or equivalent undergraduate degree.
Undertaken a minimum of 1 year of university level study.
