The programme is divided into modules. You will normally take modules totaling 780 credits over 5 years.
• Year one comprises modules totaling 120 credits
• Year two comprises modules totaling 120 credits
• Year three comprises modules totaling 180 credits
• Year four comprises modules totaling 180 credits
• Year five comprises modules totaling 180 credits
Required modules
After a one-week introductory course, you will spend the remainder of year one studying biomedical sciences and topics relevant to the practice of dentistry. Throughout the year, you will be introduced to the clinical aspects of dentistry and dental technology and shown the relevance of basic science. Year one comprises modules totaling 120 credits which include the following topics:
- Biomedicine in Relation to Dentistry 1 (30 credits)
- Biochemistry, Physiology, Tissues & Organs
- Biomedicine in Relation to Dentistry 2 (30 credits)
- Head & Neck Anatomy, Oral & Craniofacial Biology
- Clinical Humanities & Wellbeing (15 credits)
Professional identity formation and personal sustainability, managing transitions, cultural competency, introduction to global oral health, preparing for complexity and uncertainty, values-based practice, leadership and innovation
- Dentistry in Society (15 credits)
Person-centred communication, Social & Behavioural Sciences, Dental Public Health, professionalism, management & leadership.
- Simulated Clinical Practice (15 credits)
Radiology, tooth morphology and working in a clinical environment
- Student Selected Component (15 credits)
The SSC module has been developed to add elements of flexible learning and skill building to the BDS curriculum such as creating poster presentations, engaging in critical evaluation of literature, enabling students to deepen their knowledge in chosen dental specialty/topic or field of research etc. It recognises the different learning needs and interests of the student as they progress throughout the BDS programme.
