Program Overview

Join the Classics Department at King's - ranked 1st in the UK for research excellence (REF 2021) and benefit from studying Classics from a wide variety of angles – exploring literature, philosophy, religion, archaeology and ancient history.

The Classics (Greek & Latin) BA embraces the study of all aspects of the cultures of Greece and Rome by developing your skills in Ancient Greek and Latin languages.

If you have no prior knowledge of either Ancient Greek or Latin, you can still join this programme as we offer innovative pathways to support your rapid acquisition of practical skills in these languages, allowing you to reach an advanced level by Year 3.

Students who join another programme in the Classics Department at King's and take Ancient Greek and Latin language modules in Year 1 (they need to have some knowledge of one ancient language already, as they cannot take two beginners’ modules) have the option to transfer to the Classics BA in Year 2, provided that they attain an overall result of over 70% in one of these two language modules.

Course Content
Structure

Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.

This is a three-year degree course in which you will take a combination of required and optional modules to total 360 credits.

Year 1

Required modules

In year 1 you are required to take the following modules:
- Greek Language 1, 2 or 3, depending on language experience (30 credits)
- Latin Language 1, 2 or 3, depending on language experience (30 credits)
- Greek & Latin Literature and Thought: An Introduction
Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.

This is a three-year degree course in which you will take a combination of required and optional modules to total 360 credits.

Year 2

Required modules

There are no required modules in Year 2.

Optional modules

You are required to select modules totalling at least 60 credits from a range of options in Latin and Greek languages (each module is worth 30 or 15 credits), that may typically include:
- Greek Language 3A (30 credits)
- Latin Language 3A (30 credits)
- Introductory Greek Texts: Prose (15 credits)
- Introductory Greek Texts: Verse (15 credits)
- Introductory Latin Texts: Prose (15 credits)
- Introductory Latin Texts: Verse (15 credits)

- Greek Texts: Drama (15 credits)
- Greek Texts: Poetry (15 credits)
- Latin Texts: Prose (15 credits)
- Latin Texts: Verse (15 credits)
Entry Requirement
Standard requirements

The Access to Higher Education Diploma must be 60 credits in total.

Access to Higher Education Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits overall: 33 credits must be from units awarded at Distinction, with 12 at Merit.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma must include at least 15 level 3 credits in Latin, Ancient Greek, or Classical Greek awarded at Distinction. Alternatively, applicants can provide an additional level 3 qualification to meet the subject requirement (A level or equivalent).

The Access to Higher Education Diploma must be in a relevant subject - Humanities or similar - to be considered.

Contextual requirements

The Access to Higher Education Diploma must be 60 credits in total.

Fees & Scholarships
Tuition Fees

Full time tuition fees UK:

The UK tuition fee is currently £9,250 per year. This is based on the UK Government’s cap.

Full time tuition fees International:

The International tuition fee is £21,840 per year.

Please note that the International tuition fee is subject to annual increases in subsequent years of study, in line with King’s terms and conditions.

All International applicants to Undergraduate programmes are required to pay a deposit of £2,000 against their first year’s tuition fee. This deposit is payable when you firmly accept an unconditional offer to study with us, and will be offset against your tuition fees when you join King’s.

If you choose the study abroad option with one of King’s partner universities, you will not be charged tuition fees by the host university (although some partners do charge a small administration fee for applying). King’s will continue to invoice for a proportion of King's tuition fees. You should also budget to pay for the associated subsistence costs, such as travel, visas, accommodation and food as well as any vaccination/immunisations required by the country to which you are travelling.
