Program Overview

Discover the relationship between the great works of classical antiquity and literature from around the globe on this joint degree. This inter-departmental course looks at the comparative study of global literature, with particular attention to the literature and cultures of the classical world. You will research key areas of the topics, and study them from different viewpoints – you will have the opportunity to compare different approaches as well as literary genres, themes and contexts.

You’ll study the ancient world and its legacy, with options from the Bronze Age to Modern Greece, whilst also becoming an expert in comparative study as you explore literature spanning 2,500 years and six continents.

Your time will be split equally between the Department of Classics and the Department of Comparative Literature.

The Department of Comparative Literature at King's covers 10 languages and 5 continents. It spans over 2,500 years and extends beyond the modern works of literature of Europe to the Americas, Australia, the Middle East, South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
All Comparative Literature modules are taught in English translation, though you are encouraged to read in the original language where possible and supported in the development of new linguistic skills.
Our flexible course structure allows you to pursue your research interests and choose from a wide variety of modules across a number of departments.

Course Content
Structure

Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.

This is a three-year degree course in which you will take a combination of required and optional modules to total 360 credits.

Year 1:

Required modules

There are no required modules for Classical Studies in Year 1.

For Comparative Literature, you are required to take the following 15-credit modules:
- What is Comparative Literature? Conceptions & Methods (15 credits)
- Comparative Literature: Theoretical Foundations (15 credits)
Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.

This is a three-year degree course in which you will take a combination of required and optional modules to total 360 credits.

Year 2

Required modules

There are no required modules for Classics in Year 2

For Comparative Literature you are required to take the following compulsory modules:
- Ideas of Nation (15 credits)
- Literature & Empire (15 credits)

This is a three-year degree course in which you will take a combination of required and optional modules to total 360 credits.

Year 3

Required modules

There are no required Classics modules in Year 3.

Standard requirements

The Access to Higher Education Diploma must be 60 credits in total.

Access to Higher Education Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits overall: 33 credits must be from units awarded at Distinction, with 12 at Merit.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma must include at least 15 Level 3 credits in English Literature or English Language and Literature awarded at Distinction.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma must be in a relevant subject - Humanities or similar - to be considered.

Contextual requirements

The Access to Higher Education Diploma must be 60 credits in total.

Access to Higher Education Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits: 30 credits must be from units awarded at Distinction, 12 from units awarded at Merit, and 3 from units awarded at Pass.

Tuition Fees

Full time tuition fees UK:

The UK tuition fee for the 2022-2023 academic year is currently £9,250 per year. This is based on the UK Government’s cap.

Full time tuition fees International:

The International tuition fee for the 2022-2023 academic year is £21,840 per year.

Please note that the International tuition fee is subject to annual increases in subsequent years of study, in line with King’s terms and conditions.

All International applicants to Undergraduate programmes are required to pay a deposit of £2,000 against their first year’s tuition fee. This deposit is payable when you firmly accept an unconditional offer to study with us, and will be offset against your tuition fees when you join King’s.

If you choose the study abroad option with one of King’s partner universities, you will not be charged tuition fees by the host university (although some partners do charge a small administration fee for applying). King’s will continue to invoice for a proportion of King's tuition fees.

You should also budget to pay for the associated subsistence costs, such as travel, visas, accommodation and food as well as any vaccination/immunisations required by the country to which you are travelling.
