Overview
About
The Goldsmiths University of London, founded in 1904, is an open research institution affiliated with the Association of Commonwealth Universities. It was previously known as the Goldsmiths Technical and Recreational Institute and was later renamed to its current name. In 1990, the university was granted a royal charter. It has been a part of the University of London for more than 100 years, and its campus is humming with creative energy due to the diverse array of subjects it offers, industry-standard facilities, and students and staff from over 130 different countries.
After the institute was merged with the University of London in 1904, the initial objective of the university was to promote knowledge, technical skills, and health of industrial workers and people of the working and artisan classes. Since then, the university has expanded to include a close-knit community, a creative powerhouse, and a rich academic heritage, and become a place that provokes thought. The Privy Council of the United Kingdom has approved and accredited the university.
Reginald Blomfield, a well-known architect, built and designed the university. The number of students enrolled at the university increased rapidly in the 1960s. The university started offering textile, sculpture and painting diploma programmes in that same year. Beginning in 1980, it started providing undergraduate and graduate degree programmes in various areas of the arts and humanities. The university's academic programme comprises the departments of Design, Sociology, Art & Humanities, Media & Communications, Music and Anthropology. Students have a wide range of options for choosing among the subjects based on their areas of interest thanks to the departments' various courses.
Approximately 1,500 schools and colleges collaborate with the university. Student gets the opportunity to participate in a student exchange programme and learn about a different curriculum. Additionally, students have the opportunity to work as professional interns. Princess Beatrice of York – a member of the British Royal Family, Damien Hirst –a British Artist, Edward Enninful - a fashion designer & Rauf Klasra –a Pakistani Journalist are a few of the notable alumni of the university.

The university's library has a vast collection of journals, books, and academic papers and access to the library's electronic resources is also permitted by the university. There are large cafes, seminar rooms, lecture halls, and digital classrooms on campus. The campus offers a tranquil learning environment for students. The Institute for Creative & Cultural Entrepreneurship and the Department of Media & Communications are also located on the campus. A seven-story structure on the campus houses the Department of Art, the Center for Computation & Culture, and a studio. Additionally, the campus offers accommodations for university students. Listed below are some of the remarkable Goldsmiths University Of London facilities-
Student facilities: There are many student support services that provide assistance and direction throughout your time in college, from the moment you start until you leave and beyond. This includes a counselling service for students, housing and lodging, a special careers service, guidance on student loans, and more.
Housing facilities: Whether you prefer the supported environment of halls or more independent living that allows you to interact with a larger student population around the city, the university offers a variety of housing options. A committed team of staff members is available to assist students in making the most of their time in the welcoming and active community on campus. Presently, there are seven halls available to Goldsmiths students, all of which are situated around campus or close by. There are approximately 1,200 rooms overall.
Library facilities: About 300,000 books and 7,000 print and electronic journals, as well as a plethora of online resources covering topics like the arts, humanities, and social sciences, are housed in the university library. The library is a well-liked location on campus since it has a recently renovated area for socialising and group work, a small café, study spaces, and computer labs. The library is open nearly every day of the year, nearly 24 hours a day so that every student can find a place to study whenever it's most convenient.
Medical facilities: Amersham Vale Medical Practice and Goldsmiths have partnered to offer medical services to students. It offers a full range of services, such as immunisations, travel health care, and mental health care.
ICT facilities: Students at the university can get assistance from a devoted IT services team both online and in person. To assist you with any IT issues relating to your studies, a variety of support is available. Additionally, the library has computer rooms where students can use a computer. Students can reserve a wide range of IT items, including webcams, microphones, cameras, MacBooks, and more, through an equipment loan service.
Sports facilities: Tennis courts are available for reservation on the campus for students. There is also a sizable open area known as the College Green, which is great for hanging out with friends and is frequently used by sports teams for practice. The Loring Sports Ground and other locations are used by Goldsmiths' sports clubs for events and activities when they are off campus. Badminton, cheerleading, yoga, basketball, football, taekwondo, bouldering, ultimate frisbee, and other sports are all played in sports clubs.
Student clubs: There are numerous clubs and societies at the university that students can join as a part of the Students' Union. On campus, the Students' Union has a separate building that houses a cafe and bar and is a great place to meet and greet people. The Chess Society, Dance Society, Debating Society, Film Society, Korean Culture Society, and Photography Society are a few examples of clubs and societies. The SU regularly hosts social events and activities that students can take part in, and there is a vibrant community of other students that they can join.
