Program Overview

The MA Motion Graphics allows you to engage with new and emerging technologies in the application of moving image software and hardware for design outcomes and interventions.

Part of the MA/MFA Design Suite, the course benefits from bringing together designers from a range of disciplines into core modules, as well as modules specific to your chosen pathway such as 'Moving Image Design', 'Photo-video Imaging' and ‘Art Direction’.

All students complete the Live Project and you will study 'Thinking: Research for Creative Practice', which will help you to determine your Research Portfolio (MA) or Major Project (MFA) topics.

Course Content
Visual information is more often than not, accessed via digital media devices and we have the opportunity to create graphic design that moves. This programme will develop your skills in the design of moving images and graphics. Using industry standard software (including Cinema 4D and Adobe Creative Suite). You can work on a rage of projects with motion graphics and typography, screen based info-graphics for exhibition, graphic animations, interstitial clips, photo-video imaging, graphics for film and television, moving image art direction, light art and projection, and short films.

The programme has close links with the MSc Creative Advertising and the MA Film, and is supported by the Edinburgh Napier design team, who are actively engaged in research, knowledge exchange and consultancy work as part of the Art & Design Research Centre (ADRC). We also have industry-based practitioners teaching on the programme.

Andy Smith has more than ten years of industry experience with expertise design and moving image software. He is also a qualified drone pilot and works with aerial footage.

Lei Cox is an associate professor with more than 30 years of experience. He has expertise in photo-video imaging and landscape photography, and has exhibited work all around the world.

You'll study a variety of modules during the course, including:
- Moving Image Design
- Production & Art Direction
- Design for Heritage & Cultural Spaces (elective)
- Photo-video Imaging (elective)
Entry Requirement
You will be eligible to apply if you have gained a bachelors degree with overall grade of 55% or above.
For our MSC Computing with Professional Placement course you will need an overall grade of 60% or above.
