Those who have completed the PG Diploma in Public Health (District Nursing/Health Visiting/School Nursing) can proceed to the MSc Dissertation.

To complete the MSc Public Health (District Nursing, Health Visiting or School Nursing), you must successfully complete the School of Health Science MSc Dissertation module (60 credits).

  Teaching and assessment

  Your learning will be divided equally between work-based practice and taught modules at the School of Health and Psychological Sciences.

• Our Technology Enabled Care Studio, a specially designed studio flat fully equipped with the latest telehealth and telecare technologies, will give you first-hand experience of the cutting edge developments shaping modern community and home-based healthcare.

  For your work-based practice, you will work alongside a practice assessor or practice supervisor while completing learning activities and a practice assessment document.

  You will also undertake 15 days additional experience in a related area. Previous students have worked with food banks, specialist nurses, environmental health officers and been involved in community development projects, both in London and elsewhere.

UK
To be eligible to apply to join the District Nursing part of this programme, you will have completed a period of experience of sufficient length to have consolidated pre-registration outcomes and to have gained a deeper understanding in relevant professional practice.

In most cases, this will be two years post registration experience, including experience working in a community setting.

Applicants for Health Visiting and School Nursing programmes should also have active registration on Part one or Part two of the NMC Register.

If health visitor or school nurse applicants are newly qualified evidence of this registration must be provided within two months of commencing the programme.
 

BSc (Hons)
You should have 120 academic credits at level 5 (HE Diploma)
You are required to present evidence of study in the past five years at HE level five or above.

Graduate Diploma
You should have 120 academic credits at level 6 (HE Degree). You degree may be of a lower second classification or less or you may not wish to proceed to postgraduate level study
You are required to present evidence of study in the past five years at HE level six or above.

Postgraduate Diploma / MSc
You should have an undergraduate degree in a health or allied subject with either a first or upper second classification. You are required to present evidence of study in the past five years at HE level six or above.
 

Application process

This course is not suitable for students who are not eligible to work in the UK.
 

The health care providers will advertise, usually via NHS jobs, for employment as a student district nurse, health visitor or school nurse in NHS Jobs. Ask about secondment within your own organisation if you work for a community health care provider. Apply to such healthcare providers, usually via NHS Jobs, naming the preferred institution.
 

Once you been through the selection process with the healthcare provider and received an offer from them, you will need to complete the university’s application form.

Career
Depending on which practitioner route you follow, on successful completion of this programme, you will be eligible to apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Specialist Practice District Nurse, or to register as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse if you want to become a health visitor or school nurse.

As your career progresses, you could consider roles such as:

practice teachers
community matrons
nurse consultants
Managers
professional organisation officers
institution lecturers
specialist roles within district nursing/health visiting/school nursing.

Placements
A practice placement is an integral part of the programme, and you will spend 50 per cent of your time working alongside a practice teacher or mentor.
