Engineering with Business BEng (Hons)

The Engineering with busines course takes an interdisciplinary approach to engineering and business and management to enable development of skills necessary for modern businesses globally.
 

Over four years, you will develop the professional engineering, management and business skills required, with a focus on core engineering and design skills, entrepreneurship innovations, strategy and business sustainability.
 

Individual and group projects involving design and business aspects demonstrate your expertise to future employers, whilst the fourth year, at Master’s level, helps you transition from study to professional practice.

• Students will be trained to understand and analyse the broader context in which the engineering systems are used, integrating processes and information in a holistic way, dealing with the challenges of complex engineering challenges

• Benefit from exceptional industry involvement in the degree programme, taking advantage of the London location of City, including undertaking projects set by industry and guest lectures from practising engineers

• Students will benefit form the collaboration between engineering and Bayes Business school in the delivery of the programme.

• Study in world leading research facilities where different engineering solutions are designed, developed and implemented for industry today

• Take an optional placement year or placement over two summer periods to boost your employability, building on the strengths in research and their industrial collaborations across the Department of Engineering, where engineering and business skills are put into practice to make impact to meet the needs of industry today

Course content
 

You will develop a strong technical background in the key subjects which require the integration of concepts across the breadth of engineering, as well as management studies and engineering design which are also integral parts of the course. The Engineer in the Society module in each of the study year progressively develops social responsibility and other general skills required by future engineers.
 

Year 1

Build a firm foundation in mathematics, engineering, physics, electronics and computing, with our mostly shared first year with other engineering programmes in addition to the special module of principles of interdisciplinary thinking in engineering with business.
 

Year 2
 

Students will specialise in key aspects of engineering and business, where learning includes modules on project management, finance and accounting, entrepreneurship, innovations management and sensor systems, instrumentation and surveying.
 

Year 3
 

Students deepen their expertise with applied modules in today’s engineering businesses including system integration, through life engineering, strategy in engineering and technology firms, supply chain management and energy policy and regulations.

  GCSE:

  A minimum of grade 4 (C) in English Language and Mathematics in addition to other outlined requirements.

  In addition to our other entry requirements, City also accepts T-levels with the following grades:

  • T-Level in Design, Surveying and Construction. Must have an overall “Distinction” with at least B in the core. Must have “Distinction” in the Occupational specialism of Civil Engineering
     

  Contextual offers

  We apply a contextual admissions process for UK undergraduate applicants who have been in care or are the first in their family to enter Higher Education. Those who are eligible may receive a conditional offer with reduced entry requirements, typically two grades lower for A-levels and one grade (or eight tariff points) for BTEC or mixed qualifications.

  Mixed qualifications

  Typically the only scenario where we make conditional offers expressed as UCAS tariff points is when an applicant presents mixed qualifications, most typically a combination of A-levels and a BTEC qualification.

  In this instance, we may make a tariff point offer to present the applicant with more flexibility on equivalencies. In this case, please be aware that we may still ask for a specific score across certain qualifications and subjects. E.g. 'This offer is conditional on you achieving 128 tariff points. This must include A-level Mathematics at grade B.'
   

  Access courses

  Access to Higher Education Diploma in a Physics and Mathematics based discipline for entry to the BEng only. The minimum academic requirement is to achieve 60 credits overall, with 45 credits at Level 3, of which 33 credits must be at Distinction and 12 credits at Merit or higher. Applications are considered on a case by case basis.
   

  Subject exclusions

  We do not accept General Studies and Critical Thinking. These subjects will not be included in any conditional offer we make.
   

  Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

  We welcome applications from students who are completing relevant EPQ Projects. Whilst we recognise the value of these projects in preparing students for independent learning at university, the EPQ is unlikely to form part of any conditional offer we make.

  The EPQ will also not lower the specifics of any conditional offer we choose to make. We will consider the EPQ as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.
   

  AS levels

  We recognise that there will be differences of opportunity varying by school and college. As not all students will have the opportunity to sit AS Level exams, it is unlikely we will include AS Level grades in any offer we choose to make. Where students have completed an AS Level subject, we will consider this as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.
   

  BTEC

  BTEC (Level 3 Nationals only).

  • D*DD in Engineering (First teaching Sept 2016) with minimum grade D in units 1 - Engineering Principles, 7 - Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems and 8 - Further Engineering Mathematics. Candidates must also have a minimum of grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics and Science/Physics.

  • D*DD in Civil Engineering / Construction and the Built Environment / Building Services Engineering (First teaching Sept 2017) with minimum grade D in unit 1 – Construction Principles and unit 15 – Further Mathematics for Construction. Candidates must also have a minimum of grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics and Science/Physics.

    If your first language is not English, we will require evidence of English language proficiency. Minimum requirements are:

    6.0 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.

  • PTE Academic: 59 overall with a minimum of 59 in each component.

The cost of studying at City, University of London varies largely depending on the type of university and the degree chosen. More often than not, humanities, arts, and education courses are less expensive than degrees in medical, engineering, or management. Furthermore, students who choose to study at the postgraduate level typically pay higher tuition fees, which again vary depending on the programme chosen.

Most universities provide scholarships or financial aid to students in order to help them offset their tuition costs. Students should be aware that additional course fees and incidental expenses may not be included in tuition. On average, international students can expect to pay £20,500 annually, to study in City, University of London.
