Our department hosts the City Health Economics Centre (CHEC) and the London Health Economics Group (LHEG). Your studies will benefit from the expertise in both.

You will be also be confident in applying economic evaluations and advanced quantitative methods to healthcare decision-making.

This programme is suitable if you are passionate about helping to meet the growing demands for specialists in the economics of health and care. You may have a background in science or economics, giving you the chance to find employment in the field of health economics.

You should have:

• Some mathematical background (A-level, IB, AP or any other equivalent secondary school qualification)
  and

• An upper second class (or equivalent) undergraduate degree in an economics related discipline (e.g. Finance, Business), Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing or any other health science related discipline.

 

Students with a good lower second class in one of the above disciplines might be considered on a case-by-case basis

 

You must also meet the English language requirement for the programme.
 

English language requirements
 

If English is not your first language you will need the following qualification:

• IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.0 for each sub-test) OR

• A first degree from a UK university or an overseas institution recognised by City as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions in Australia or the USA.

 

All applicants that require a Student visa must meet the minimum Home Office English Language ability requirements before City can issue the Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS) that is needed to apply for a Student visa.

The Economic Evaluation in Healthcare MSc can prepare you for careers in areas such as economic consultancies, think-tanks, the pharmaceutical industry and governmental and non-governmental bodies. You might also go on to teaching and research positions at academic institutions.

We also give you a strong foundation for further doctoral research in the field of health economics. Our graduates have obtained PhDs from the institutions such as the University of Oxford and the University of Warwick.
 

Internships
 

During the second term we invite companies to come to City and talk to our students about potential dissertation projects that can be done within Summer internships. We do not guarantee placements, but we put firms and students in touch, the selection process is entirely up to the company. About three quarters of our students get placements to write the dissertation.

 

Upon the end of the placement some students are offered a job with the company. Organizations that regularly offer placements include IQVIA, Office of Health Economics, Takeda, Daiichi Sankyo, and FIECON.
