This degree provides you with the knowledge, skills, and professional competencies necessary to practice as a midwife and enter onto the midwifery part of the NMC register.
 

The course is designed to ensure you enter the profession confident in your ability to provide care for all women, both those who experience straightforward pregnancy and childbirth, and women with more complex health needs.
 

Our focus is on the central role of the midwife in ensuring that families’ needs and preferences are understood and met. Alongside practical midwifery skills, you will develop your critical thinking and ability to assess factors affecting pregnant women, parents and families, such as their emotional wellbeing, social environment and cultural background.
 

• Develop practical professional skills through simulated practice in our specialist Clinical Skills Centre, before moving on to clinical placements

• Learn with specialist equipment that simulates birthing situations from normal to emergency, developing the skills you need no matter the birthing situation you are supporting

• Study with experienced practitioners and research-active academics, providing you with skills and knowledge from the forefront of the discipline

• Spend half of your degree on clinical placement in London's leading hospitals and community settings such as Barts Health NHS Trust and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

• Learn in diverse settings including midwifery-led units, home births, birthing centres, delivery suites, maternal and fetal assessment, and special care baby units.
   

Course content
 

During this three-year BMid Midwifery degree, you will be supported to develop your autonomy and accountability as a midwife. You will learn the professional knowledge and practical skills to care for women during pregnancy, childbirth and the immediate postnatal period.
 

Year 1
 

Develop skills, professional knowledge and an understanding of the midwife’s role. Put theory into practice with clinical placements in hospital, midwifery-led units, and women’s homes.

• The midwife as scholar 1: Finding evidence (15 credits)

• The midwife in society 1: What is public health? (15 credits)

• The midwife as advocate and ambassador 1: Introducing professional issues (30 credits)

Year 2
 

Build upon previous knowledge and experience, and deepen the understanding of midwifery studying complex pregnancy and birth and working in partnership with women and multidisciplinary teams.

• The midwife as scholar 2: Critiquing evidence (15 credits)

• The midwife in society 2: Public health role of the midwife (15 credits)

Year 3
 

Consolidate your skills and knowledge and develop your confidence to work independently as you prepare for professional practice.

Placement
 

Practice experience is a vital part of the BMid Midwifery degree and enables you to put theory into practice and use your skills in a variety of real-life contexts. This includes mandatory learning in the workplace, which comprises 50% of your degree on clinical placement.

Important information regarding COVID-19 vaccination

 

Clinical placements are an exciting and essential part of the training required to become a qualified Midwife.

 

To protect students, staff and patients during these experiences, we strongly encourage our students to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (unless medically exempt).
 

University preparation programmes
 

If you do not qualify for direct entry, you may wish to take a foundation programme first. These programmes are designed to prepare students for entry to City's undergraduate courses.
 

Access to HE Diploma

 

Pass in a QAA recognised Access to HE Diploma in a Nursing, Midwifery, Health, Science, or Social Care subject NOT Nutrition or Paramedic Studies. Full award (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 credits must be at Level 3 including 30 credits at Distinction. Applicants must also hold GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C (4) or above at the point of application to the programme.
 

Selection process

 

As well as meeting the stated academic entry requirements, applicants will be required to attend an online interview as part of the selection process, to ensure that your values match those of the NHS Constitution.

 

Students are required to have occupational health and enhanced DBS (disclosure and barring service) clearance. Academic and character references are also required. Please see the Entry Requirements page for full information.
 

Mixed qualifications

 

We often use tariff points within our offers. Any conditional offer based on tariff is likely to only be based on the equivalent of an applicant's top three A-level grades.

 

We do not offer any flexible offers on this course.
 

Subject exclusions

 

We do not accept General Studies and Critical Thinking. These subjects will not be included in any conditional offer we make.
 

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

 

We welcome applications from students who are completing relevant EPQ Projects. Whilst we recognise the value of these projects in preparing students for independent learning at university, the EPQ is unlikely to form part of any conditional offer we make.
 

The EPQ will also not lower the specifics of any conditional offer we choose to make. We will consider the EPQ as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.
 

AS levels

 

We recognise that there will be differences of opportunity varying by school and college. As not all students will have the opportunity to sit AS Level exams, it is unlikely we will include AS Level grades in any offer we choose to make.

 

Where students have completed an AS Level subject, we will consider this as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.

If your first language is not English, we will require evidence of English language proficiency. Minimum requirements are:
 

IELTS:
 

7.0 overall with at least 7.0 in Writing, 7.0 in reading, 7.0 in Listening and 7.0 in Speaking.
 

TOEFL iBT: 94 overall with at least 27 in Writing, 24 in reading and Listening and 23 in Speaking sections.
 

You must include evidence of your IELTS score, or the date you will be completing the test, on your application.

Career
 

On successful completion of this degree, you will gain registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, an internationally recognised professional qualification allowing you to practice in the UK and overseas. Some countries require additional registration.
 

Almost 90% of our graduates go on to employment or further study within 15 months of graduation (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2017/18). Career options include working in:

• acute units

• consultant and specialist roles

• self-employment / independent practice.
   

Our graduates earn an average salary of £27,000 within 15 months of completing this course (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2017/18). Many graduates advance to a Band 6 role within 6 – 12 months of graduating.
