The university is now firmly established as a top 400 global university, and seven CUL subjects have also made it into the top 200 global subject rankings, with Communications and Media performing best. CUL has a strong musical reputation due to its affiliation with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Nursing and midwifery, social work and social policy have also performed well in the subject rankings.

 

In the 2021 REF, the university was ranked 39th out of 129 universities in the UK which was an improvement of 12 places since REF 2014. In REF 2021, the proportion of its research rated world-leading nearly doubled to 40%. In 2018 and 2019, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Ranking) placed CUL among the top 1000 universities. Times Higher Education (THE) has raised the university’s ranking in its best university ranking from 401-500 in 2020 to 351-400 in 2021.
