BEng in Civil Engineering with Sustainability

Course delivery is a combination of theory and practical sessions. In your first two years, you will gain solid knowledge and understanding of mainstream civil engineering. You’ll also develop your reflective skills and professional development planning through the ‘Professional Skills’ module and your personal development log. In your final year, you move on to modern topics such as sustainable infrastructure development and you will work on your individual research project.
This course can be studied 3 years full-time or 4 years full-time with placement, starting in September.
Year 1

• BE1601 - Engineering Mathematics and Programming
• This module aims to develop the ability to understand and apply fundamental methods of engineering mathematics. It introduces the use of programming in engineering to improve the skill to represent and solve problems algorithmically.
• BE1602 - Engineering Practice
• This module develops the study skills needed in all engineering disciplines to support the journey through Higher Education and into professional life and thus maximizing employability.
• BE1603 - Engineering Systems and Energy
• This module aims to provide a grounding in concepts of measurement and uncertainty, knowledge about applied physics relations that govern engineering systems within their boundaries and to establish ability to define system boundaries and apply relevant simple models.
• BE1606 - Engineering Mechanics and Materials II
• This module provides a grounding in the fundamental principles of engineering mechanics. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the common and important material properties for various engineering applications and problem solving.
• BE1605 - Engineering Mechanics and Materials II
• This module aims to provide a grounding in the fundamental principles of engineering mechanics, knowledge and understanding of the common and important material properties for various engineering applications and experience in problem-solving.
• CE1620 - Introduction to Contemporary Civil Engineering
• This module aims to develop students’ understanding of the contemporary civil engineering profession, and their understanding of what being a Chartered Civil Engineer involves. This includes developing student’s fundamental ability in technical drawing through sketching and their ability to work in groups and apply taught concepts with creativity for problem solving.

• CE2608 - Construction Material and Sustainability
• This module aims to provide students deeper understanding on construction materials design and applications, including their strength and limitations. It will extend students’ appreciation on sustainability and application of sustainability in engineering construction.
• CE2604 - Civil Engineering Toolbox and Professional Skills
• This module uses an integrated project approach to prepare the students with a toolbox of interpersonal skill sets, practical hands on experience, technical skills and tools essential for a modern Civil Engineer to approach, develop and solve day to day challenges attractive to employers.
• CE2605 - Geotechnical Engineering
• This module aims to develop students’ understanding of the basic principles of seepage, consolidation and shear strength of soils. It will introduce students to rock mass strength, slope stability, bearing capacity and foundations.
• CE2607 - Hydraulics
• This module aims to deepen students’ understanding of engineering fluid dynamics, hydraulics and hydrological processes. It will enable students to apply these concepts to relevant engineering systems, in particular, flow in pipes; flow in open channels; hydraulic structures; energy dissipation and runoff flow estimation.
• CE2606 - Structural Design and Detailing
• This module aims to develop students’ understanding of the principles of structural design and iterative design process and enable students to understand the role of reliability theory in determining load and resistance factors in codes of practice.
• CE2003 - Structural Mechanics
• This module aims to enable students develop further their ability to analyse structures including statically indeterminate structures and learn the fundamental principles and the main tools for the analysis of solid body mechanics.

• CE3610 Civil Engineering Design
• This module aims to introduce students to the principles of preliminary and detailed design of reinforced concrete structures. It will help students to apply the principles of preliminary and detailed design for foundation structures.
• CE3611 - Contract Management, Procurement and Risk
• This module aims to develop students’ knowledge and awareness of construction procurement strategies, basic principles of contract law and contractual procedures during design-construction process. It will develop students’ knowledge and awareness of construction project management techniques, and health and safety risk management relevant to civil engineers.
• CE3009 - Final Year Project
• This module aims to provide students an experience in planning and conducting a major sustainable civil engineering project. It will exercise application of analytical, numerical and/or experimental methods in the analysis of a civil engineering problem and review the results, develop self-direction in finding solutions and draw conclusions.
• CE3613 - Sustainable Transport Infrastructure Engineering
• This module aims to develop students’ understanding of the factors that influences the development of sustainable infrastructure. It will provide students’ knowledge and understanding of different approaches to improving infrastructure systems, focusing on the transport and energy sectors.
• CE3002 - Water and Wastewater Engineering
• This module aims to introduce students to the principles of hydrological processes in water and waste water engineering. It will help develop students’ competence in applied hydraulics and its application in civil engineering.

Fees quoted are per year and may be subject to an annual increase. Home undergraduate student fees are regulated and are currently capped at £9,250 per year; any changes will be subject to changes in government policy. International fees will increase annually, by no more than 5% or RPI (Retail Price Index), whichever is the greater.
Fees for EU applicants – For entry in 2022/23 academic year, eligible EU applicants will have the same tuition fees as UK students to continue our support during this transition period. These fees will be applied for the duration of the course.
