MSC Advanced Midwifery Practice

During your MSc Advanced Midwifery Practice, you’ll address one of the major national and international concerns about childbirth: the rising rate of intervention. You’ll explore the concept of ‘normality’ and how this might be promoted during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods, with consideration also given to wider influences on maternal mortality and morbidity.

We’ll look at the role of the midwife in supporting women with complex social, emotional and physical needs, and turn our attention to healthcare research – an increasingly important field which you can access, analyse and apply in all areas of patient care.

All our students can explore an area of interest to them in more depth by choosing one optional module. International students studying the full-time course can choose from: Applied Leadership & Management, Contemporary Issues in Mental Health Care, Contemporary UK Healthcare Practice and Safeguarding: A Collaborative Approach. This is due to restrictions imposed by the UK National Health Service (NHS).

We’ll assess you in a number of ways. Assessment methods vary between modules and include written essays, seminar presentations with supporting papers, a research proposal and, for your Masters award, a major project of no more than 15,000 words.

Main

• Applicants should hold an appropriate Midwifery qualification and have at least one year's post-qualification experience of working as a midwife and evidence of appropriate continuing professional development. Applicants will usually have an honours degree or equivalent qualification.
• If English is not your first language you will be expected to demonstrate a certificated level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.5 ( Academic level) or equivalent English Language qualification, as recognised by Anglia Ruskin University.

English language requirements

• IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, with nothing lower than 5.5 in any of the four elements (listening, speaking, reading and writing).

Completing our MSc Advanced Midwifery Practice gives you the potential to move into leadership positions in clinical settings, or follow a career in the fields of management, research and teaching.

If you choose to learn on campus, you’ll also have the option to complete the course with an additional qualification as a Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) practitioner.
