TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT
12 months full-time
Year 1
On this Masters course you’ll cover the issues, principles and practices relating to all aspects of publishing, including the national and international legal environment, organisational and management issues, and marketing principles.
You’ll learn how publishers work with authors and designers as they prepare text and images for publication in both print and electronic format.
Guided by specialists you’ll explore case studies that illustrate contemporary issues in the industry. You’ll gain an understanding of how publishing operates across various platforms and become familiar with different publishing organisations.
Workshops will help you gain commissioning and editorial skills and equip you with the professional skills needed to negotiate rights purchase and sales, and develop international co-editions.
The Major Project module is your opportunity to carry out an in-depth investigation. This could be a dissertation, a case study report related to your work experience, or a business plan for a publishing venture you intend to pursue once you complete the course.
MA students complete all taught modules plus the Major Project. Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma students complete two (Certificate) or four (Diploma) modules for their award, and can choose to top-up to a full MA by completing the Major Project.
Modules are subject to change and availability.
Assessment
You will show your progress on the course through a combination of essays, reports, business plans, book proposals and individual or group presentations, as well as your final Major Project.
