TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT

1 year full-time (September start)

Central to this MA History will be your exploration of the practical and theoretical issues involved in presenting history to a wide public.
You’ll cover the development of museums in their historical and social context and consider the tensions inherent in how history is presented on radio and television.

Taught sessions will be delivered by ARU experts, outside speakers and specialist practitioners. You’ll be encouraged to carry out your own analysis of current museum displays and broadcasts and research and plan a museum exhibition or draft your own script for broadcast.

Alongside your major research project, you will undertake four exciting modules: Consumption and the World of Goods c1600-1830, Race, Racism and Resistance in Modern Britain, which address these issues from the eighteenth century to the present, Going Global: Making of the Modern World, which covers the last two decades of the twentieth century, and Public History.

Modules are subject to change and availability.

Assessment

We use a range of assessment methods, including essays, reports, source analysis and assessed presentations. These will allow you to engage with the ideas and knowledge taught on each module and to undertake original research, while thinking about how history is changing.

Some modules include innovative assessment methods. On Public History, you can research and write your own television or radio history programme, or plan a museum exhibition. On A History of Race, you will visit galleries and museums to analyse and decode images of race. These different assessment methods will help prepare you for working in media, journalism, museums and the heritage industry.
