TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT

12 months full-time (September start)

Year 1

Our Masters in English Literature degree starts with a study of Shakespeare’s works and their creative reception. You will consider the context of the social changes at work in his era and in the following centuries. You’ll also examine key cultural contexts, such as gender, race, politics and power, as well as re-appropriations of his work including prequels and sequels in fiction and drama.

Writing that relates to the revolutions and major reforms of the ‘long’ 19th century will form the focus of the second core module. Social and political change will also provide the framework for your analysis of literature from the 20th and 21st centuries.

A further core module focuses on research methods and will equip you with the skills needed to complete your Major Project. This is your opportunity to explore in depth a topic that reflects your academic interest.

In consultation with the Course Leader, you will have the opportunity to replace one core module with an Independent Learning Module or a module from our MA Publishing or MA Creative Writing courses.

Assessment
Assessment includes a combination of essays, critical reviews and presentations, as well as a 15,000-word dissertation. You can get advice on essay writing at consultation workshops which are built into the course.

Tuition fees for international students (2022/23)
£15,000

International students starting 2022/23 (full-time, per year)

You can pay your tuition fees upfront, in full or in two instalments. We will also ask you for a deposit of £4,000 or a sponsorship letter. Details will be in your offer letter.

Our MA English Literature will give you the higher-levels skills to stand out in today’s competitive job market.
