Join a course taken by many successful published authors and take your creative writing to a professional level.

Our Masters course in Creative Writing will give you the opportunity to improve your writing by practising and sharing it with a close group of fellow writers, including specialist lecturers who are published authors.

You’ll study the most acclaimed writers of the past 200 years and discover the techniques they used to make their work stand out. We’ll give you opportunities to practise your technique in areas such as characterisation, structure and pacing, and experiment with different forms of writing.

Our Creative Writing Masters degree enables you to develop your own writing while studying topics ranging from publishing to Renaissance drama.

A core module invites you to consider what it means to write novels and what it means to be a writer. You’ll examine the history of the novel from its formation in the 18th century through to some of its more modern forms and study some narrative theory.

Optional workshop-based modules will combine exercises to sharpen your technique with practical advice on finding agents and how to get your work published.

The Masters Major Project will give you the opportunity to develop a piece of writing in depth, alongside a critical commentary.

The work might be part of a longer fiction project such as a novel or screenplay, or a collection of short stories or poems. This is an opportunity to showcase your work and consider how to present it to agents and publishers.

MA students complete all taught modules plus the Major Project. Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma students complete two (Certificate) or four (Diploma) modules for their award, and can choose to top-up to a full MA by completing the Major Project.

One module from Workshop: The Short Story; Workshop: the Novel; and Special Topic in Creative Writing may be substituted with one of the optional modules listed below from the MA English Literature or the MA Publishing, or with an Independent Learning Module.

Modules are subject to change and availability.

You will show your progress on the course through a mix of essays, your own writing samples, and critical reflections on your work.

The major project at the end of the course will allow you to submit up to 15,000 words of your own writing project, including a critical commentary.

Entry Requirement
A recognised pre-Masters course.
3 year Bachelors or 4 year Bachelor Engineering or Technology, minimum division 2 (50% - 59%) in relevant subjects.
4 year Bachelor of Laws complying with above for entry to LLM.
Bachelor’s degree from the University of Delhi or the University of Calcutta with 45%.
