TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT

1 year full-time (September start)

Year 1

On this Masters course you’ll study second language learning as a core module. You’ll explore the major themes that have emerged from the research on the second-language acquisition process. We’ll encourage you to use your own language learning and teaching experience as you assess these approaches.

Alongside this you’ll examine the relationship between language and society. You’ll study sociological and sociolinguistic models and theories and discover different approaches to linguistic and discourse analysis.

An introduction to research methods will prepare you for your Major Project. This is your opportunity to explore in detail a topic that reflects your particular interest.
Optional modules include course design and classroom practice, while modules such as Intercultural Relations and Communication and Language, Identity and Policy will help prepare you for a teaching career across the world.

For distance learning students, core modules will include Classroom Theory and Practice, and Materials and Course Design, with no optional modules.

Assessment
You will show your understanding of the theoretical issues explored on the course and their practical application through various methods, including portfolios, classroom observation tasks and critical essays. At the end of the course, you will also research and complete a 15,000-word major project.

Main
A good honours degree (or equivalent), normally in a related subject. Applicants with professional experience are also encouraged to apply.

If English is not your first language you will be expected to demonstrate a certificated level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.5 (Academic level- with no individual score being lower than 6.0) or equivalent English Language qualification, as recognised by Anglia Ruskin University.

Tuition fees for international students (2022/23)
£15,000

International students starting 2022/23 (full-time, per year)

You can pay your tuition fees upfront, in full or in two instalments. We will also ask you for a deposit of £4,000 or a sponsorship letter. Details will be in your offer letter.

Careers
Our MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL will help you prepare for many language-learning and teaching-related professions, such as teaching English and other languages (in the UK and abroad), and developing courses, tests, materials or language policy.

Graduation doesn’t have to be the end of your time with us. You could choose to continue your academic career with a research programme at ARU such as our PhD English Language and Linguistics or PhD English Language and Intercultural Communication. Take advantage of our Alumni Scholarship and save £400 on your fees.

If you studied for the Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma initially, you can choose to complete further modules and top-up to a full Masters degree.
