3 years full-time

Year 1
Public health is all about understanding how people’s surroundings can affect their health.

And so we’ll jump right in, looking at public health and how it aligns with medical and social sciences. You’ll look at issues impacting heath, lifestyle choices, the human body and promoting good health.

You’ll begin to record your professional journey and prepare for a career by developing your skills and logging them in an e-portfolio.

During Year 1, we’ll also touch on population health – looking at disease and considering how it’s reported and monitored.

Year 2
In Year 1 we looked at the different job opportunities in public health. This year, we’ll expand on that by developing our research skills – an important part of any public health practitioner’s role.

We’ll focus on health policy and communication too, working collaboratively to produce recommendations to address a specific public health issue, and considering how we can encourage people to adapt or change their behaviour. You’ll expand your knowledge on global health and international public health practice.

You’ll look at different methods of communication with individuals and populations, examining previous UK and international campaigns before developing your own.

You'll also take one of our Ruskin Modules. These give you the opportunity to work with students from different courses to come up with creative solutions to complex problems and key challenges facing society.

Year 3
Year 3 is all about putting your knowledge and skills into action.

You’ll go on work experience, volunteering in an area of particular interest to you, and create a presentation at the end to share your experiences.

You’ll look at different healthcare systems, the ways in which they’re funded, and the challenges posed by shifting demographics and demand.

There’s a further opportunity to gain practical experience, by identifying a specific community or population, looking at the issues it faces, and designing a social project based on your research You’ll then ‘pitch’ to mock investors in a Dragon’s Den style presentation and complete a grant application.

We’ll also prepare for life after graduation with sessions on interview skills and responding to job adverts.

Main
80 UCAS Tariff points from a minimum of 2 A Levels (or equivalent).

5 GCSEs at grade C, or grade 4, or above, including English and Maths.

If English is not your first language you will be expected to demonstrate a certificated level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.0 (Academic level) or equivalent English Language qualification, as recognised by Anglia Ruskin University.

You can pay your tuition fees upfront, in full or in two instalments. We will also ask you for a deposit of £4,000 or a sponsorship letter. Details will be in your offer letter.

Careers
Public health has never been more important, relevant and wide-ranging, and there’s a host of career paths to follow.

You might like to work as a public health practitioner, youth worker, drug and alcohol worker, public health information officer or analyst, health improvement practitioner, health protection practitioner, sexual health advisor, smoking cessation co-ordinator, community development or outreach worker, or health communications officer. You could even go into health-related research.

While studying at ARU, you’ll gain skills and knowledge that will be relevant in local government, the NHS, education, consultancy, the not-for-profit sector, and international agencies like the World Health Organization or UNICEF.

We work with employers including Public Health England to make sure you graduate with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need. They help us review what we teach and how we teach it – and they offer hands-on, practical opportunities to learn through work-based projects, internships or placements.

Graduation doesn’t need to be the end of your time with us, of course. You might decide to stay at ARU and study for a Masters, such as MSc Public Health and Community Wellbeing or MSc Global Public Health. Take advantage of our Alumni Scholarship and get 20% off your fees.
