Program Overview

UCD offers the widest choice of Science programmes in Ireland, providing degree courses in Biological, Chemical, Geological, Mathematical, Physical and Computer Sciences. We recognise that the transition from school to university may be challenging and all our staff are committed to supporting and assisting students during their university life.

UCD Horizons enhances the subject choice available to Stage 1 students. In addition to Science modules, modules from other disciplines, e.g. languages, business and law, are also on offer.

You have chosen one of four streams within DN200 depending on your scientific interests. By choosing a stream, you can tailor your study plan to focus on a particular area or sample more widely to explore your interests.

Course Content
First year for the DN200 Science programme is designed to enable you to sample a number of subjects in your chosen area but also includes some core subjects required for all degrees, for example Mathematics. It ensures that you have the foundations in the subjects you require for your degree but it also allows students who have not taken a subject at second level to study it at university. The choices you make in first year will have a bearing on your final degree subject(s). In first year, students have a mixture of lectures and practical classes every day. Typically, lectures take place in the mornings, practicals in the afternoons. In addition to the subject modules you must study as part of your degree, you also take two additional modules called electives, which you may choose from anywhere across the university, including Science.
Entry Requirement
You may apply to study abroad for either a semester or a year through the Erasmus programme or on a non-EU exchange.

UCD has over 200 Erasmus partners in Europe and an increasing number of non-EU exchange agreements with universities in the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and elsewhere.

IELTS

An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version.

In 2022 and 2023 we will accept IELTS indicator. It may not be recognised after that depending on the outcome of a review.

TOEFL

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (iBT) with no less than 21 in writing and at least 19 in every other section.

In 2022 and 2023 we will accept TOEFL Home Edition. . It may not be recognised after that depending on the outcome of a review.
