Program Overview

Medical Scientists are key to the delivery of Pathology diagnostic services for patients. Within Clinical and Laboratory Medicine, Medical Scientists lead on diagnostic services in: Cellular Pathology (Histopathology), Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Immunology, Medical Genetics, Medical Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics, Near Patient Testing, Transfusion and Transplantation Science and Virology. This course provides multi-disciplinary training and clinical laboratory placement in all Medical Science disciplines, so that you may work in any of the following areas in pathology: Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Cytology, Cellular Pathology, Haematology, Medical Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics, and Transfusion Science.

Course Content
This is a full time 2 year course delivered over 4 academic semesters.

This programme has a January start and in Semester 1 you will study Haematology, Medical Microbiology, Cellular Pathology and Clinical Cytology, Transfusion Science, Clinical Chemistry, Applied Immunology and Professional Practice.

In semester 2 and 3, you undertake a 30-week Clinical Laboratory Placement in a designated hospital pathology laboratory. Your training will consist of 1000 hours in 6 disciplines.

In the final semester you study Research Methods and Data Interpretation and you will select two further modular options from Clinical Chemistry, Cellular Pathology, Haematology, Transfusion Science, Medical Microbiology and Clinical Immunology.

Professional practice modules are also run throughout the 2 years.

Bachelor Degree Programmes in Agriculture/Dentistry/Engineering/Pharmacy/Technology, Usually 4 years in duration :
Minimum grade Required/Degree 2:2 Equivalent : Tier 1: 50%, Tier 2: 55%.
Very Good/2:1 Equivalent : Tier 1: 65%, Tier 2: 70%.
Excellent/1st Equivalent : Tier 1: 75%, Tier 2: 80%.

Minimum grade Required/Degree 2:2 Equivalent : Tier 1: 5/10 CGPA, Tier 2: 5.5/10 CGPA.
Very Good/2:1 Equivalent : Tier 1: 6.5/10 CGPA, Tier 2: 7/10 CGPA.
