Overview
About
The National College of Art and Design was founded in 1746 as a forerunner for art education in Ireland. The roots of the institution may be directly traced to Robert West's painting school in George's Lane, which was started in 1746 and afterwards financed by the Dublin Society. The French Enlightenment, Victorian design schools, notably industrial design, the Arts and Crafts movement, the search for Irish national identity, and changes in British art education in the 1960s all had an effect on the institution. This college has taught and developed notable artists and designers and continues to do so. Its work has advanced the study of art in Ireland.
NCAD was situated for most of its existence at Kildare Street, in a group of buildings adjacent to Dáil (Parliament) and the National Library of Ireland. Since 2017, the College campus has been highlighted in Dublin (Dublin Discovery Trail), a self-guided tour that gives visitors an overview of both the modern college and the location's and the building's historical context. The four schools that make up NCAD are - Design, Fine Art, Visual Culture, and Education. They offer a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programmes as well as research-based study up to the PhD level.

Moreover, in collaboration with the School of Education, students can pursue a four-year Joint Honours BA Degree (qualifying them to teach at the secondary level) in tandem with any of the College's specialisations. Visual Culture is an element of all degree courses, and the School of Visual Culture also provides a single three-year degree track that is not studio-based.
Attracted by a dynamic atmosphere & sensitive to the most recent advances in art, design, education, visual culture, criticism, and theory; artists, designers, theorists, critics, historians, educators, and other cultural workers undertake postgraduate study at NCAD. Students connect with top practitioners while also accessing techniques, ideas, critical processes, and approaches. At NCAD, the postgraduate programme is supported by a full-time academic staff of 64 lecturers and tutors, as well as part-time and specialised visiting lecturers, postdoctoral, research, and Fulbright Scholars. The institution promotes a vibrant environment for learning and research and offers postgraduate students the technical, disciplinary, and critical knowledge they need, and advances the cutting edge of their specific subject.

According to the QS World University Rankings 2022, NCAD is one of the top 100 art and design universities in the world. The National College of Art and Design rankings have been included in the top 100 for the past two years, moving up five spots, from 73 to 68, and finishing 40th overall in terms of academic reputation. Facilities
NCAD is located on a 6-acre urban campus in Dublin, Ireland's capital. The campus is made up of a variety of buildings from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries that house a number of academic departments and services geared at students. On campus, some of the most famous structures include the Distillers Press Print-Working Shop, Origin 8, Edward Murphy Library, and more.
Students will be intellectually and creatively challenged by NCAD's learning environment, which combines theoretical background with hands-on studio practice. NCAD Entry Requirements
Students should be ready with the necessary documentation when applying for admission to NCAD in Ireland. It is advised that students ask the university directly for a list of required documents because it may differ depending on the country. NCAD accepts applications from eligible students from all around the world, and each application is reviewed individually. Admission to studio programmes is contingent on completing minimal academic criteria as well as submitting a portfolio. Other credentials (Third Level courses, for example) will be considered if students apply. International candidates must provide verified transcripts of their second-level or comparable exams in order to be eligible for the National College of Art and Design entry requirements. NCAD Fees
There are two major elements that affect the National College of Art and Design fees for undergraduate courses. They include - the Course costs and the Student contribution charge. Most first-time, undergraduate, non-repeat, EU students only pay the €3,000 Student Contribution Charge. The Irish Government covers the tuition fee for all qualified full-time, non-repeat undergraduate EU/EEA/Swiss students who satisfy the following requirements under the Higher Education Free Fees Initiative:
- Are first-time university students
- Have had a regular residence in an EU/EEA member state for at least three of the five years before enrollment to an authorised programme, or have Swiss nationality, EU/EEA nationality, or official refugee status.
Students from outside Ireland must pay the full tuition charge. Those who have not established a permanent residence in Ireland are ineligible for maintenance funds from the Irish grant agencies. NCAD's full-time programmes are on the list of authorised programmes for non-EU/EEA/Swiss students seeking employment (the Internationalisation Register of the Department of Education and Skills).
- Undergraduate courses cost around €16,500 per year, for a duration of three years and honours programmes cost around €13,500.
- The average master's tuition fee at NCAD is 16,500 EUR for a 15-month programme, with certain programmes costing between 28,000 and 29000 EUR for a two-year programme.
