• The Moving Image: Introduction to media practice (moving images), approaches to video, navigating digital imaging software, storing and saving files, collaborative practices, gallery visits and screenings.

• Photography and Image Capture: Introduction to the medium of photography and imaging acquisition, capture and processing, photographic skills, concepts and practices, photography and associated technologies
     

• Visual Literacy: Introduction to the principles of visual literacy. How meaning is made and communicated in still and moving images

• Exploring Light: The creative and expressive uses and control of available light in photography and video with reference to historical and contemporary practices, introduction to the skills and technical knowledge to best exploit the qualities of available light

• Photography Histories: the historical milestones in the evolution of photography as a visual medium, photography within the more general context of art and design history

• Working with Images: entire and efficient workflow in digital photography and video, developing effective photography and video skills and efficient working practices through the stages of pre-production, production and post-production

• Investigating Place: exploring the concept of place within photography and video, along with associated visual and physical qualities, landscape, cityscape and/or interior space

• Electives include: Time Based Media Design; Film Language; and Animation Principles

For admission to a programme, standard applicants must

• meet the minimum entry requirements and

• present a portfolio of work for review

• The normal CAO points system does not apply to the BA in Photography with New Media MT 822.

Instead applicants are required to meet the minimum academic requirements

i.e. a Leaving Certificate in six subjects (H5 in two subjects, and O6/H7 in four other subjects). One of the subjects must be English or Irish. There is no specific requirement for Mathematics. A Grade F2 or higher in Foundation Level Mathematics is recognised as one of the subjects for entry.

• Alternatively applicants should have any QQI/FETAC major award comprising 8 subjects with 3 Distinctions.

• Applicants are also required to present a portfolio of work for review. The portfolio will be marked, with a maximum of 600 points being available for it. A minimum mark of 240 is required to be considered for a place on the programme.

When you apply for the programme, you will receive a letter from MTU CCAD outlining the specific date and times when you will be required to submit your portfolio.

Leaving Cert Subjects:
 

Helpful subjects are Art, Maths, and English.

L1: At least 80 - with minimum scores: Listening- 17; Reading - 18; Speaking – 20; Writing - 17

The fees for Photography with New Media (BA Honours) may vary from - €10,000 to €25,000 anually for tuition fees. The fee's prices may get higher for international students.

The photography, video and media industry covers a diverse range of professional activity. There is hardly a social activity that does not require the services of a photographer or videographer in some way, and image industry professionals all acknowledge the shift that requires them to be proficient in both still and moving image capture, as well as in all of the associated post-production work. The photography with New Media graduates can also go on to further studies to Master’s degree level and PhD.
