Program Overview

Structural Engineering is the science and art of designing civil engineering facilities so that they can safely resist the forces to which they may be subjected. All structures from bridges to buildings, harbours to airports, must be able to meet these requirements. Structural Engineers aim to design these structures with safety, economy and elegance.

The course is taught primarily through lectures, practicals, and tutorials. A significant emphasis is placed on project and experimental work with site visits and field trips making up an integral part of the coursework. There is a continuing regional, national and international requirement for structural engineers with a knowledge of construction.

Entry Requirement
For admission to a programme, standard applicants must
- score the necessary CAO points and
- meet the minimum entry requirements
Leaving Certificate examination in six subjects i.e. H5 in two subjects, and O6/H7 in four other subjects. The six subjects must include Mathematics*, and either English or Irish.

*A grade H4 is required in Mathematics which may also be satisfied by H4 in Applied Mathematics plus H6 in Mathematics.

NB: The H4 grade in Mathematics can also be used to satisfy one of the H5 entry requirements.

Info re MTU Cork Mathematics Exam only:

Some students who apply to MTU Cork courses may not achieve the required entry standard in Mathematics through the Leaving Certificate. For such applicants, MTU offers a second chance to reach the required entry standard through a MTU Cork Mathematics Exam. This second chance facility allows applicants (depending on their results in the MTU Cork Mathematics Examination) to gain entry to courses with an Ordinary Leaving Certificate Mathematics entry standard, and (with a higher level of performance) courses with a Higher Leaving Certificate entry standard.

Helpful subjects are Mathematics, Physics, and English.

L1: At least 80 - with minimum scores: Listening- 17; Reading - 18; Speaking – 20; Writing - 17
Fees & Scholarships
The fees for Structural Engineering (BEng Honours) may vary from (Range) Exmaple - €10,000 to €25,000 anually for tuition fees. The fee's prices may get higher for international students.
Career Prospect
Graduates will be well equipped to find employment opportunities in Consulting Engineering Offices and with Building & Civil Engineering contractors. They may also be employed by state and semi-state bodies, including local authorities and utilities boards.

Opportunities vary in range and location and can be exclusively office based, site based or a mixture of both; the profession is an attractive one for those seeking a wide choice of potential work environments.
