Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) in Computer Systems is a four-year level 8 degree programme designed for students who have a keen interest in computer system, embedded systems and software development. With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), computer systems engineering is a fast growing sector of the international computing industry. Embedded systems have become widespread and can be found in almost all modern consumer devices, from washing machines to modern cars. A computer systems engineer is someone who combines knowledge of computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis to develop, test and evaluate software for personal computers and more.

It is specialised and targeted toward a particular job market. If you feel that you would be interested in planning and designing the computer networks used to allow computers communicate all over the world then apply for this course. This programme has been designed so that the first year curriculum is common for all degrees in the Department of Computer Science, MTU Bishopstown Campus. This means that students can transfer to another programme in the Department in year two if they meet the CAO entry requirements for that programme when they enter MTU Cork. This offers great flexibility for qualifying students who may wish to change programmes after year one. This flexibility allows a student to make a more informed decision one year into his/her studies.

Entry Requirement
For admission to a programme, standard applicants must
- score the necessary CAO points and
- meet the minimum entry requirements
- Leaving Certificate in six subjects i.e. H5 in two subjects, and O6/H7 in four other subjects. The six subjects must include Mathematics, and either English or Irish.
- *Mathematics must be at least Grade O3/H7.

Some students who apply to MTU Cork courses may not achieve the required entry standard in Mathematics through the Leaving Certificate. For such applicants, MTU Cork offers a second chance to reach the required entry standard through a MTU Cork Mathematics Exam. This second chance facility allows applicants (depending on their results in the MTU Cork Mathematics Examination) to gain entry to courses with an Ordinary Leaving Certificate Mathematics entry standard, and (with a higher level of performance) courses with a Higher Leaving Certificate entry standard.

Leaving Cert Subjects:
- Helpful subjects with ‘problem solving skills’ or that require analytical thought, e.g. Mathematics, Science, Engineering, and Business.

L1: At least 6.0 with no section below 5.5

TOEFL

L1: At least 80 - with minimum scores: Listening- 17; Reading - 18; Speaking – 20; Writing - 17
Fees & Scholarships
The fees for Computer Systems (BSc Honours) may vary from - €10,000 to €25,000 anually for tuition fees. The fee's prices may get higher for international students.
