About
The Université de Sherbrooke (UdS) is an institution of higher education located in the city of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. The main campus is located near the centre of the city with several smaller satellite campuses located nearby and across the city. UdS has its origins in the merger of two Catholic theological colleges, originally founded to train clergy for French Canadian parishes. Its main predecessor was founded in 1869 by Bishop François-Xavier-Anselme Trudel, who went to Rome to ask Pope Pius IX for permission to found a new seminary.
The university was founded on March 9th, 1876 as a Jesuit institution by James Vincent Cleary with funding from both the French Canadian Catholic bishops and the government of Quebec. The school opened its doors on November 1st, 1877, and taught only arts at first. A science department was added in 1889 and it became a full-fledged university by 1904 when it awarded its first Bachelor's degrees in law, medicine, and pharmacy to graduates who studied for their diplomas there between 1906–1914.
The university has over 40,000 students spread between its 13 faculties, 3 affiliated schools, and 1 affiliated university faculty, and some 2,000 professors and researchers as well as over 800 administrative staff to provide you with an outstanding academic environment. Sherbrooke offers more than 300 programmes from certificate to doctorate levels in various fields. The University of Sherbrooke’s acceptance rate is about 68%, indicating a moderately selective admissions process for new students.
