About
The University of Quebec in Outaouais (UQO) is a French-language public university based in Gatineau, Quebec, and a member of the Université du Québec system. Founded in 1981, it is one of the newest universities in Canada. Although the university courses had been offered in the area since 1971 (provided by the Services Universitaires Dans l'Outaouais, or SUO), the university was founded in 1981 under the leadership of René Lévesque (Parti Québécois). When the cities of Hull, Gatineau, Aylmer, Masson-Angers, and Buckingham merged to become the new City of Gatineau in 2002, UQO changed its name from the University of Quebec at Hull (UQAH).
The Outaouais administrative region, where the university is headquartered, is reflected in the new name of the institution. Each year, over 5,500 students enroll in courses at UQO. Although this is the lowest enrollment in the Université du Québec system, there is a growing demand for more programs, courses, and resources as a result of the growing student body.
