Overview

About

Trinity Western University (TWU or Trinity Western) is a private Christian liberal arts university located in Langley Township, British Columbia with a satellite campus in Richmond and Ottowa. The idea was born when a committee was established by the Evangelical Free Churches of America (EFCA) to look into the possibility of establishing a liberal arts institution in the Fraser Valley. One of the committee's founding members, a Christian educator, and church leader David Enarson, had a vision for a recognized Christian university. Members of the group acquired the Seal Kap dairy farm in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia and created plans for the college's construction. With the founding of Trinity Junior College in 1962, the vision finally came true.

The university has had a distinct vision for Christian liberal arts and sciences education in Canada ever since its founding. The early vision was shaped in part by Dr. Calvin B. Hanson, the first president. Two decades later, the college reached two significant milestones with 800+ enrolled students. The university was given full membership in the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) in 1984, and the British Columbia legislature renamed the Trinity Western College Act to the Trinity Western University Act in 1985, establishing TWU as a university, under the direction of the second president, Dr. R. Neil Snider.

Trinity Western University’s acceptance rate stands at 58% and enrolls approximately 5,000+ students from 80+ countries. TWU is Canada's largest privately funded Christian university with broad-based liberal arts, sciences, and professional studies curriculum, offering around 48+ undergraduate degree programs and 20+ graduate degree programs. In the classroom, the university has a 16:1 student-faculty ratio, an average first-year class size of 25, and an overall average class size of 15.

The alumni organization aids the institution in maintaining contact with its graduates and keeps them informed of the activities going on on campus. In addition, alumni have a significant role in selecting the university's president and executive team. The 30,000 alumni include Philipp H Wiebe (Professor of Philosophy at Trinity Western), Carolyn Arends (Author, songwriter, and musician), Roger Cross (Television & screen actor), and many others.

Ranking

The Globe and Mail gave TWU an A-level rating for "Overall Student Satisfaction" and an A+ for its "Sense of Community on Campus." Now offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs, TWU is Canada's top global Christian university and a pioneer in liberal arts education. The university has also received a national distinction for the overall quality of its education, according to studies by The Globe and Mail University Report and Maclean's magazine. The Canada Research Chair in Person-Centred Outcomes and the Canada Research Chair in Cardiovascular Adaptation to Exercise are both held by the university.
