Overview

About

Previously known as Ryerson University, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is a public research university in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Although it also has facilities elsewhere in Toronto, the university's main campus is located in the Garden District. As the Ryerson Institute of Technology, the institution was founded in 1948. The university changed its name to Ryerson University in 2002, a couple of years after its graduate school had been established. Prior to the announcement, some students referred to the institution as X University. In 2022, the school's new name Toronto Metropolitan University was announced.

The university is a coeducational establishment that enrols roughly 44,400 undergraduates and 2,950 graduates. The Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Community Services, the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, the Faculty of Science, The Creative School, the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, and the Ted Rogers School of Management are the university's seven academic divisions/faculties. Several of these faculties are subdivided further into divisions and schools. The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education also offers continuing education services within the institution.

Innovation is the driving force behind the university's objective to create healthy communities and encourage good social change, from its leading experiential learning programs to its ground-breaking entrepreneurial environment. The institution has fostered an entrepreneurial culture that has allowed it to build one of the world's largest experiential learning programs. The Zone Learning network is a collection of ten on-campus incubators where students may apply their degree courses to the development of products, businesses, and social enterprises. These zones include a wide range of fields and allow students to obtain real-world experience and industry mentorship before graduating.

Toronto Metropolitan University’s acceptance rate stands at an average of 80% demonstrating a moderately selective admissions process at the institution. TMU's research is on a roll: externally financed research has more than quadrupled in the last four years. The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education is Canada's largest university-based adult education provider. The Digital Media Zone, a space for students to collaborate and bring their digital ideas to market, epitomises the university's emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship.
