About
Queen's University is a public research university in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. It is also known as Queen's popularly by locals. Queen's College was founded by the Church of Scotland in October 1841, thanks to a royal charter from Queen Victoria. Today it is a coeducational institution with over 23,000 students and over 131,000 alumni worldwide. It is worth noting that the Queen’s University acceptance rate stands at 42% making it a competitive university to get into.
The university grounds are located in Kingston. The main campus of the university is surrounded by residential communities that make up the University District of Kingston, including Kingston General Hospital, Lake Ontario, and city parks to the east. From Summerhill, which opened in 1839, to Mitchell Hall, which opened in 2018, the buildings at Queen's range in age. The university's most iconic landmark is believed to be Grant Hall, which was finished in 1905. It bears the name of Reverend George Munro Grant, the eighth principal at Queen. Concerts, seminars, meetings, tests, and convocations are held in the structure.
The Board of Trustees, the Senate, and the University Council, the first two of which were founded by the Royal Charter of 1841, are responsible for overseeing university governance. The Board is in charge of the university's behaviour, management, business, finances, and affairs. In addition to being a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, Queen's is a publicly financed research university. Several faculties and schools make up Queen's. These include the School of Public Policy, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Smith School of Business, Health Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Education, and Arts and Humanities. Many of these faculties and schools include additional divisions & departments.
Government officials, academics, business leaders, and 57 Rhodes Scholars are among the notable alumni. As of 2022, the university was home to five Nobel Laureates and one Turing Award winner.
Ranking
Queen's University has achieved success in numerous renowned ranking agencies. The University was ranked 201-300 worldwide and 9-12 in Canada in the 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities rankings. It was also placed 11th in Canada in the 2023 QS World University Rankings. The university was ranked 11–13 in Canada in the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Additionally, it was placed eighth in the 2022 Medical-Doctoral Canadian university rankings by the Canadian news publication Maclean's.
