The Marine Institute, one of the most renowned institutions of marine education and applied research in the world, is situated on the border of the Atlantic Ocean. A public university in Canada, Memorial University of Newfoundland's Marine Institute offers courses in marine and ocean engineering. The university, Memorial University of Newfoundland, is connected to the college. The Marine Institute offers a variety of programmes across three schools. The College of Fisheries, Navigation, Marine Engineering, and Electronics was established at the erstwhile Memorial University College site on Parade Street by Newfoundland Premier Joey Smallwood in 1964.  The Institute of Fisheries and Marine Technology, as it was once known, transferred to its current Ridge Road location in 1985 and changed its name from Fisheries College. The Fisheries and Marine Institute of the Memorial University of Newfoundland joined Memorial University in 1992, resulting in a second name change.

 

The Institute is divided into three Schools, including the School of Fisheries, the School of Maritime Studies, and the School of Ocean Technology, each of which has a number of specialized centres and divisions. Over 20 industry-driven programmes, spanning from technical certificates to master's degrees, are offered by the Marine Institute. The Institute also grants advanced degrees, technology degrees, and technical certificates in addition to undergraduate and graduate degrees.

According to THE Impact Rankings, Memorial was among the top 101-200 global universities in 2022, out of 1406 total. The Marine Institute has satellite campuses throughout the world in addition to its flagship campus in St. John City. The offshore safety and survival centre (OSSC) in Foxtrap and the safety and emergency training facility in Stephenville are examples of satellite facilities.
