The College of Fisheries, Navigation, Marine Engineering, and Electronics was established at the erstwhile Memorial University College site on Parade Street by Newfoundland Premier Joey Smallwood in 1964. The Institute of Fisheries and Marine Technology, as it was once known, transferred to its current Ridge Road location in 1985 and changed its name from Fisheries College. The Fisheries and Marine Institute of the Memorial University of Newfoundland joined Memorial University in 1992, resulting in a second name change.
The Institute is divided into three Schools, including the School of Fisheries, the School of Maritime Studies, and the School of Ocean Technology, each of which has a number of specialized centres and divisions.
