About
Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECUAD) is a public post-secondary art school and university located on Granville Island in Vancouver, British Columbia. It was founded in 1925 as the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts (VSDAA) and was renamed Emily Carr Institute in 1978. In 1995, it became an independent degree-granting institution named after the Canadian artist, Emily Carr who lived from 1871 to 1945. The school began as one of Canada's first independent colleges for women's education and later became co-ed before becoming a university under its present name in 1989.
The institution has more than 1,800 students enrolled in graduate and undergraduate programmes with a 55% admission rate, and many more are enrolled in workshops, certificate programmes, and individual courses. Their teachers, staff, and former students are well-known on a global scale as award-winning innovators and thought leaders whose work continuously increases the resiliency and potential of the economy's cultural sectors.
Most programmes offered by ECUAD are Bachelor's degrees that take three years to complete; however several programmes can be completed over a shorter period of time while others offer Master's degrees following the completion of an undergraduate degree. The university offers undergraduate degrees in four academic schools: the School of Art + Design; the School for Continuing Studies; the School for Critical Inquiry & Cultural Leadership; and the School for Interactive Arts + Technology (iCAT). Its graduate programmes are offered by each school except iCAT. In addition to these four main schools, there are also professional programmes such as Writing & Publishing and Social Innovation through Community Service Learning that do not fall under any particular category but rather have been developed based on specific needs identified within workplace scenarios in the communities of British Columbia.
