Overview

About

On the slopes of the North Shore Mountains in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Capilano University (CapU) is a public university with a teaching-focused mission and offers programs that also benefit the Sea-to-Sky Corridor and the Sunshine Coast. The school bears the name of Chief Joe Capilano (also known as Sa7plek), who served as the Squamish people's head chief from 1895 to 1910. Due to the need for a public institution to serve the nearby areas directly northwest of Vancouver, school boards and people of the North Shore and Howe Sound formed the university in 1968 as Capilano College.

Capilano University’s acceptance rate stands at 72% with 12,700+ students out of which around 1,200+ are in non-credit programs, 9,000+ in for-credit programs and 2,500+ are international students. The academic offerings of the university include prestigious liberal arts, and professional, and career programs that result in degrees, diplomas, and certifications.

The Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training of the Government of British Columbia has given its approval to the degree programs offered by CAPU. The University Act of British Columbia sets forth the university's legal authority to issue degrees. The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (or NWCCU) in Washington, one of the six significant regional organizations in the US recognized by the US Department of Education, accredited the university in 2012, making it the first university in Canada to do so. The athletic teams at the university, known as The Blues, have claimed 61 Pacific Western Athletic Association provincial championships and 15 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championships.

The English department sponsors the yearly publication of The Liar by the university's creative writing students. The Capilano Review was founded by university teachers in 1972. It is an arts publication that emphasizes drama, poetry, fiction, and visual art. The publication changed its status in 2015 and moved its headquarters to downtown Vancouver.

Union of Students in Capilano: The Capilano Students' Union (CSU) is open to all students enrolled in credit programs. The university resident student society, or CSU, promotes the interests of students while also advancing the needs of the college and the local community. The CSU's mission, like that of other student organizations in British Columbia, is to support students and offer programs and services that enhance the student experience. Students ultimately have control over CSU's operations, even though day-to-day management is delegated to an elected board of directors that is guided by the society's bylaws and constitution.
