About
Brock University (BU), located in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, is a public research university established in 1994. It is Canada's only institution located in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, on the Niagara Escarpment in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula. The institution is named after Maj General Sir Isaac Brock, who was in charge of defending Upper Canada against the US during the War of 1812.
BU offers a diverse selection of 130+ degree programs out of which 70+ are undergraduate programs and 50+ are graduate programs. Brock University’s acceptance rate stands at 73% with around 19,000+ part-time and full-time students studying at the university in various study areas. In 2008, BU was ranked third among Canadian universities for undergraduate research publication output and impact measures. It is the only university in Canada and the world that offers the MICA (Mathematics Integrated with Computing and Applications) degree program. The Department of Health Sciences at the university offers Canada's only undergraduate degree in public health. BU provides 49+ graduate programs, including 9+ PhD degrees.
As of 2011, BU's co-op program was the fifth-largest in Canada and the third-largest in Ontario. The university is home to 12 Canada Research Chairs and nine faculty members who have earned the 3M Teaching Fellowship Award, the only national award that acknowledges teaching quality and educational leadership. Non-academic community engagement is strongly promoted at BU, with students clocking an average of 65,000 service hours per year. Any student from the university can form their own group. Clubs at the university are divided into three categories: (A) Cultural, Religious, and International Clubs; (B) Social, Recreation, and Activist Clubs; and (C) Faculty & Departmental Clubs.
Apart from clubs, there are many other events that include parades and cancer marathons organised by the student clubs or the university.
