About
Established in 1965, Algoma University (sometimes known as Algoma U or Algoma) is a public university with its main campus in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It is a teaching-focused and student-centered post-secondary university that specializes in liberal arts, sciences, management, and professional degree programs. Algoma U, which is located on the former site of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School, has a unique aim to provide and cultivate cross-cultural learning between Aboriginal populations and other communities. In addition, the university provides satellite programs in Brampton and Timmins, Ontario. The university was an affiliated institution of Laurentian University in Sudbury and was formerly known as Algoma U College from its inception in 1965 until June 18, 2008. The Algoma University Act of 2008 is the enabling legislation.
Algoma University’s acceptance rate is 27% with around 2,000+ students with more than 70 languages and 170 different cultures represented by its student community. There are 40+ programs available at Algoma U, including three and four-year bachelor's degrees in biology, business, computer science, community development, English, geography, history, psychology, social work, sociology, political science, music, and fine arts. It also provides 9 undergraduate and graduate certificate programs, as well as one- and two-year certificate programs in Project Management, Information Technology, Human Management, Computing, Business, Health Science, and Software Development. In Timmins and Brampton, the university also provides extensive programming.
The alumni of Algoma U include Michael Cachagee (famous teacher, activist, and speaker), Ryan Harnden (Canadian curler), Josephine Mandamin (founder of Mother Earth Water Walkers), Shirley Fletcher Horn (first chancellor of Algoma U), Joanne Robertson (a well-known author) and many more.

Libraries & Archives: Arthur A. Wishart Library is a member of the Ontario Council of University Libraries and a contributor to the Open Content Alliance. The Engracia de Jesus Matias Archives and Special Collections and the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre are both managed by the Arthur A. Wishart Library. The Engracia de Jesus Matias Archives and Special Collections serve as the official repository for the university, the Anglican Diocese of Algoma, and the Ecclesiastical Province of Ontario's documents. The Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre (SRSC) is a collaborative archive operated by the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association dedicated to documenting the legacy of Canadian residential schools.
Convergence Centre: This new facility commenced in September 2009. In addition to state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratory space for students and academics, it houses several research institutions, including the Health Informatics Research Institute, the Invasive Species Research Institute, and the Sault Ste. Algoma Games for Health and the Marie Innovation Centre The Convergence Centre formally opened its doors to students in September 2011.
Athletics And Recreation - George Leach Centre (GLC): The George Leach Centre (home to The Algoma Thunderbirds') is located on the university's campus. The GLC, which was built in 1992 and is named after Algoma U's first Athletics Director, provides workout equipment to university students and community members. The GLC also sponsors tournaments at the regional, provincial, and national levels. This new weight room exercise area is outfitted with modern strength and cardio equipment.
The gymnasium, also known as the field house, has three regulation court surfaces that can be used for a variety of sporting activities such as badminton, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. One court features a dimpled surface specifically intended for enhanced tennis play. A 1/9th mile indoor walking and jogging track surround the gym area. The GLC also contains a sauna, locker rooms, varsity locker rooms, and special locker rooms for refereeing officials.
The Speakeasy: The Speakeasy is the student center of Algoma U. It is attached to the cafeteria, and serves as a patio, tavern, and entertainment area. Karaoke nights, acoustic jam and open mic nights themed Thursday night pubs, live bands, comedy nights, and cultural dinners are among the nighttime events planned.

Algoma University Entry Requirements
