Program Overview

One of Sydney Law School's key strengths Jurisprudence comprises the teaching of legal theory, with a focus on the philosophical and sociological aspects of law.

The Master of Jurisprudence is an interdisciplinary program suitable if you are interested in the principles and operations of legal systems or interdisciplinary research methodology. The course is designed to expose students to the importance of legal theory in its broad sense, which includes philosophical reflection, sociological theory and comparative enquiry.

Participants come from a wide range of backgrounds, including: law students who want to specialise in legal theory and comparative studies of law; students from other disciplines, including teachers of legal studies courses in secondary education, who require a systematic introduction to and a comprehensive understanding of the operation of law; and international students from all disciplines who want to use their studies in Sydney to gain an overview of the principles and operations of legal systems.

Course Content
Master of Jurisprudence candidates complete 48 credit points, which is equivalent to eight units of study. Candidates must complete a capstone unit, Jurisprudence Research Project (12 credit points). The remaining units of study can be selected from the wide and relevant range of electives on offer.

Progression rules

Under normal progression, a student shall undertake and successfully complete all units of study to the value of 24 credit points per semester as prescribed for the course. Students are required to attend all lectures, tutorials and other activities prescribed for their units of study.

Capstone (compulsory project)

Candidates of the Master of Jurisprudence are required to complete a Jurisprudence Research Project unit of study which forms the capstone for this degree. The goal of this compulsory unit of study is to provide Master of Jurisprudence candidates with an opportunity to pursue advanced research in an area of their choosing, under the limited supervision of a School member. The Jurisprudence Research Project has a value of 12 credit points and requires completion of a substantial research paper of 15,000 to 20,000 words.
Entry Requirement
Available places will be offered to qualified applicants based on merit, according to the following admissions criteria. Admission to candidature for the Master of Jurisprudence requires a bachelor's degree from with a minimum credit average the University of Sydney, or an equivalent qualification.

Tuition Fee for Domestic Students (Year 1): $38,000 (indicative only)

For domestic students, the tuition fee is for Year 1 of full-time study of 48 credit points (1.0 EFTSL). However, for courses that require completion of less than 48 credit points (Sydney Professional Certificates, Graduate Certificates and some Graduate Diplomas which are less than 48 credit points), the fees indicated are based on the total credit points required for completion of that course as listed in the 'Course details' section.

The tuition fee that you will pay depends on the calendar year in which you undertake your study in the course, and your study load.
